I ask this question for a number of reasons. The issue that pushed me over the top, though, is mileage demand. Marathon training is putting me through a lot of shoes. I'm buying more than a shoe per month.
I read a lot of the marathon training threads and enjoy them. I then start to wonder what shoe each person is wearing for each workout, how many miles are on each, how they rotate them, when they get new ones, and all that stuff.
I'd say I train in the Mizuno Wave Rider and race in the Mizuno Wave Ronin, except...
I recently started training in the Mizuno Wave Rider and was really excited about it. I weigh 155-160 lbs, run on a variety of surfaces, and don't wear down my heel rubber terribly much. I bought a second pair in anticipation of starting to work that pair in around 300 miles. My old pair was at 200 miles. I compared the shoes when I got home and was a bit saddened, as the differences between the new and old pair were visible. The heel outsole is a horseshoe shape and I could see the side of the EVA quite well. The EVA is designed to look a little mushed already, but it had some pretty bad wrinkling. I then looked through the shoe, as it has some air holes, and could see that the new pair's air diameter was probably 50% bigger than the ones on the old pair. I did a run in the new pair and the difference was tangible immediately, so now I'm only using the old pair on fluffy grass runs.
I've got a pair of Nike Skylons on order, but I don't expect them to last long at all, because my Free 5.0 V4s lasted all of 100 miles before taking a significant nose dive by 150 miles (it's debatable that I just need to buy a new insole for them). My Brooks (Glycerins) and New Balance (758s, 1063s) shoes last a little longer, but I just don't like them as much for whatever reason. My Bio MoGo will probably rot before I wrinkle the shoe cushoning.
How quickly are you all going through shoes and which ones do you use?
I've tried the minamalist thing. I haven't really tried the maximalist thing with tons of cushioning. I'm doing a faster summer session and then a fall marathon cycle. I fully expect myself to go through 5+ new shoes at a minimum before the year is out.
P.S. Don't get me wrong, I love the Wave Riders. I'll probably keep buying them for most of my mileage.
P.P.S. Also, any sponsored athletes on here (even if not for the marathon, like you're in college still maybe) have anything to say about how often you're switching shoes since you don't have to pay for them?
