Actually, California has passed a similar law to Title IX that requires public and private schools to comply, regardless of funding. This is why it applies to PLNU.

So by eliminating the women's softball, they are actually eliminating a female sport that is played by women who are mostly men?
I love Title IX... wrote:
OK, a bit sarcastic because it's totally ruining sport - but women don't care...Women don't want to compete in sports...Simple as that. I won't argue the points - look at the data.
Anyone who knows me would know I think Title IX, as administered in 2010, does not work as intended when Title IX was adapted. But the quote above is not accurate as far as what I see in the sports I coach. Our school is in a pretty good place in terms of male/female ratio, something along the lines of 48/52 or 47/53. We have XC for both men and women. Both teams are midpack with similar resources from the school and a similar recruiting outreach (incoming high school students as well as students currently on campus). Year after year our women's XC team turns out 15-20+ on the roster, while our men's team is usually 9-12.
On our XC ski team, this year we had 5 men and 8 women. That's unusual, most years it's a little higher for men. But when I look at our league races, I believe we had more women competing all 6 weekends. And we had 1 race that was open to outside skiers and the entries were around 245 women and 210 men.
So what I'm seeing for the trend over the past 5 years or so would contradict that women do not want to play sports
I realize this is a small sample size, but I wonder what the actual data (throwing football out of the equation because there is not equivalent sport for college women) would be.

You could have started and ended there.
I wish NAIA was the big name and not NCAA.
Sorry to hear about that. I've raced on that track many a time. PLNU was my #2 choice in high school, but I chose another GSAC school. This is an absolute shame, and I'm sorry for your loss.
What I don't understand, is why they won't take out a parking lot or two (maybe the one next to the dorm nearest the softball field) and re-locate the field there. Parking can be solved by building a structure on the north east side of campus. the school has a variety of donors, major capital and endowment--i just can't see how they could not develop a solution.
the whole scenario seems fishy--like they wanted to do this all along. Look for PLNU to move D2 and add men's football in the coming years.

Isn't this what the quote was trying to say in a backwards way? The football budget is often as big as the rest of men's and women's sports combined and often supports 100+ guys. No matter that more women want to play every other sport they can never catch up.
I say use title IX to break up the budget for each sport 50/50. For the first few years hold lottery's for the Women's Football scholarships. It won't take long for Women's football participation to catch up they just need an incentive to start.
Can someone help me out here.
Could we resolve all these issues simply by making sure more males get into college therefore tipping the balance of Title IX? Cal Poly SLO is 55% male and 45% female, does that mean that the men's sports in that school get more scholarship money and funding then womens?
Nope, in that case the women still get MORE actually.
Pretty fair and balanced, eh? It's ok though, it's against men so we just have to tough it up and stop complaining.
Same goes for insurance rates.
No, we need to band together with women to go after the football money. It can be claimed that half the money paid to football comes from women (TV revenue and all) and they should get there fair share. There can be no argument that women don't like to play football. The point is that after 30 years or so a generation or two will grow up knowing women play football and are entitled to half the money. Once the football lock on money is broken 50/50 splits in every sport is simple and fair.
This really means almost nothing-- a small, Christian college right on the beach cutting a sports program is not a big deal. They can't have more than-- what-- 1000 students?? I've seen bigger high schools...
That said, I seem to recall two ball fields on the way to the beach. One is presumably for baseball, but why not just fix up that second field and dedicate it to softball?

Really? Not being able to find a softball field is reason to cut men's track and men's golf, just so they can replace softball with women's golf?
Who gives a damn about women's golf?
f***ing nobody.
All you white boys voted Obama and liberals in. This is what you get and will be getting. What dd you think you were gonna get? The big things are yet to come! Keep it up white boys!
Yeah, Obama has exactly what to do with legislation passed in 1972? The liberal commie Nixon was president at that time.
Just looking at the numbers I'm confused. They're cutting men's track, men's xc and men's golf. So they're cutting three men's sports. They are also exchanging women's softball for women's golf. So either they were not in compliance with Title IX before or they won't be now. I'm confused.
OCR says they will be in compliance next year, so they must have been out of compliance before.
I'd love to know participation numbers for boys versus girls in junior and senior high schools, maybe add in out of school club sports too. I'm pretty sure at that level the "opportunity" is pretty equivalent, but I bet the number of boys participating is alot higher.
What a shame, what a shame on the school for not figuring this out more appropriately, timely and professionally!
From what I have experienced in the few years I ran there, this is not surprising as this institution is all about fake smiles the mighty dollar.
Best of luck to all the athletes trying to find a good way out of this mess!
What a shame!
They ought to alter football so that individual players have to be more flexible.
There are players to punt, players to kick field goals, players who only cuddle, players who only catch or run, players to pour the drinks, players to stand on the sidelines speaking in ebonics.
Maybe if some of the cuddlers could catch or throw, or some of the drink pourers could tackle, maybe they wouldn't need 1000 players on a team.
