Learn a few Latin phrases and insert them into the conversation when appropriate. You'll sound like a genius.
My favorite "intelligent-sounding" word is "tenacious." "Hyperbole" and "capricious" are nice too.
And this pushes my buttons to no end....trailing off at the end of a sentence with the word "so...." It seems to happen more frequently with females than with males. Incredibly annoying.

Learning a few Latin phrases might not only make you sound smart, but if you know what they mean, they might also actually make you smarter, or at least more thoughtful.
I love "Post hoc ergo propter hoc", or, roughly, "after this, therefore because of this." This is a very common logic fallacy. For example, running injuries have increased after the introduction of cushioned shoes, therefore cushioned shoes caused the increase in injuries. Well, maybe, but maybe not. The increase could be due to myriad other factors. Become aware of this one and you'll encounter it all the time.
Lockbox.
one thing i say all of the time and then attempted to write in an email one time was "a whole nother"
The real smarties are the people who can invent their own derivatives of words or phrases and deliver them in a manner that can be commonly understood.

You bums beat me to it. The use of the word "esoteric" is quite esoteric in itself.
