If I remember correctly the cyclist actions were in response to him already threatening them with the car. One thing that really nailed him and his credibility is that there was a run-in with another pair of cyclist with similar actions that was on the record. Once the testimony from that event was part of the record the pattern was clear and his credibility was shot. I think that the severity of the sentence was related to the combination of incidents, and more might have been introduced at he sentencing phase.
