I once ran a half-marathon and finished just ahead of the 7th-place elite woman. I thought it was pretty cool that I got to race her over the last 3 miles.

Penultimate might not mean what he was planning on, but it doesn't simply mean second to last in a literal sense.

It means very nearly the most important. The definition you are referring to is as in second to last act in a play... not second to last to be picked for a pickup football game (these are two different meanings.)

Reminded? None of this is a "reminder"; we already knew they can beat us and aren't the least bit ashamed of it. First of all I don't even know what your point is with this thread. Second of all you could easily take one of the better D1 teams and whoop them. Its pretty simple math to see that the best women runners ever basically stack up to decent not great D1 college men. Its silly to compare the two sexes men have several scientific proven advantages that make them faster at track/cross country events. We don't race a boys HS team vs another girls HS team because it would just be pointless.

No, that is exactly what penultimate means: Second to last. It is only about chronological ordering, and has nothing to do with degrees of importance. And yes, it would be used to refer to both the third lap of a mile race, or the second to last act of a play, or the second to last person picked in a basketball game.That person would be the penultimate pick. That is all it means, second to last. That is all.

I also think i could beat them, I have been witness to a few tactics that would take care of them. Basically you beat the crap out of them the minute you are out of sight of an official. Guys get pushed off switchbacks all the time, I have a great pic of me swatting a guys hand who had a hold of my uniform, At our State Championships we had to have a half dozen starts from so many guys getting knocked down and trampled in the first 200 yards...

they might be fast but cross country can be more like wrestling sometimes and i could take them.

BTW 3 years before me, my school had the top 5 runners in the City XC (perfect score)they all had sub 4:15 mile PRS

in high school. While they might not beat your list of women i think they could take any womens XC team from one country...

What's with having the women taunt the high school guys they beat? If that happened at my school they would get really riled up and who knows what they would do to them.

Tergat, Geb, and Bekele would win those matchups. Kipketer too. You think all of a sudden he can't run after 800m? The woman runner wouldn't be able to "burn his kick out" after 1800m. Please.

from one country, how would your school of 5 runners at 4:15 for the mile in a cross country race versus the current ethiopian girls tirunesh dibaba 14:11 for 5k, meseret defar 14:12 for 5k, meselesh melkamu 29:53 for 10k, wude ayalaw yimer 30:11 for 10k and 19 year old aberu kebede 30:48 for 10k.

or how about if your ran abainst the 3 dibaba sisters, tirunesh, ejegeyehu about 30:10-20 for 10k and genzaba dibaba the 2 time world junior xc champ who will still be a junior next year and their aunt derartu tulu 30:10-30:20 and 2:23 for the marathon, or 10k and that is 4 from one family and even if they have a weak 5th runner they would still beat most high school team.

actually what is interesting to me is high schools in the usa does have teams every yearin the 4 x 400 that could beat any 4 woman runners sayna richards, allyson felix and the 2 best other woman 400 runners.

as a matter of fact only 2 woman in history have gone sub 48 for the 400, berkeley high school in 1981 had about a dozen kids under 48 for the 400 in 1981, with 100 and 200 meter runner ken robinson splitting sub 45 and pete richardson an 800 meter runner splitting sub 46 they had 300 meter hurdle national record holder walter murray (although i think murray set the national record the following year in 1982)

also muir high school during the obea moore years used to have an A and B team that would both go sub 41.00 in the 400 relay, so muir could field 2 teams in the 400 relay that could beat the womans world record.

i love distance running but face it our sprinters can beat the top woman all stars in a relay race (4 people), but our high school distance TEAMS cannot beat the top woman distance runners, although we do have INDIVIDUALS in high school like ryun, chapa, fernandez, pre, lindgren etc. who can beat the womans world records up to 10k, the one event that is the exception to that is the marathon which has a boys national record of 2:23 which is no where near the womans world record and about 70 woman including a 16 year old girl have run faster than our national record.

basically it means we are lagging in the distances.

Of course the fastest women in the world are going to beat the average ordinary high school boys cross coutry or track team. But if you compare their times to the fastest boys high school times they would be destroyed.

And when you comapre the men's elite track and field runners to these elite women runners you have races set up that are totatly in their favor. Of course a woman 400 meter runner will beat a men's 5000/10000 meter runner in a 200 meter race. It's swayed way to much in their favor. It would be like me syaing that i'm greater then Usain Bolt because i beat him in a 5 mile race.
