Yes.
Yes.
Will Deena run anywhere near 2:18? If not, then she is a liar. I say that she will run closer to 2:28 than 2:18.
That does not mean that she hasn't had a wonderful career. It does not take anything away from her Olympic Medal. It does mean that in 2009 she has been lowered to the level of being nothing more than a HAS BEEN that is forced to the level of having to lie about her level of fitness.
We shall see.

No. But you are wrong to treat an excellent person so poorly. I believe that she will decide to have a child following a poor performance on Sunday. This will enable her to step away from the sport more gracefully. She deserves that.
Her coach really lets the cat out of the bag saying she can't handle the long marathon training buildup either physiologically or psychologically any more because she's older and because she's got so many marathons in her legs now.
Ouch.

What if she runs 2:23:00?
She really should retire. Nothing more to accomplish. Seems like a lot of runners on the downslope are having a hard time stepping away. Go while you're at the top. Plan for your future. Running is only a snapshot of life.

I believe that Deena will not run within 10 minutes of her stated goal. If that is the case then we know that the goal was 100% bull shit.
So what? What do you care?
My problem with Kastor is how big of a game she has talked the past 2-3 years without the results to back up the big talk. She obviously has had results in the PAST, but nothing in the past few years to back up her claims of wonderful fitness.
She has had an AMAZING career, and rightfully deserves to be ranked among the very best in American history. She's been such a great competitor at 5k through marathon.
BUT, when you've had a string of poor performances/DNFs/injuries, its comes off as a bunch of 'hot air', cocky, and I hate to say it, but an asshole as well, to keep shoving your sky high goals in peoples faces. If she really IS in shape to run 2:18, or even close to that, she needs to let her running do the talking. It would be one thing if she'd medaled again in Beijing, run some more blazing times as of late, and was THEN publicly confident going into Chicago.
She has just come off very poorly in the past few years.

Since it's only 4:01 from 2:18:59 then she's closer to 2:18:xx.
You know, not for nothing, but I'm pretty sure she didn't EXPECT to break her foot in the marathon in Beijing and that she'd prepared rather well... other than the foot.
Wow, I haven't been on Letsrun in awile and things have certainly changed. I guess now the posts are dominated by numerous immature boys who find it necessary to bully and criticize everyone from world record holders to olympic medalists. A look at the Ryan Hall thread a few minutes ago left me wondering where the moderators are. It seems people are more interested in how to cheat and put others efforts down then they are in how to improve their own lot.
A sad comment on the future of running and society in general. You are truly a sad group of characters.
Spare us the melodramatic sanctimony, toots.
You are correct - Most critics on this thread need to grow up and so some respect. Their comments are unbelievable! But that is what these forums are for whether we agree or not.

If people are willing to pay her appearance fees, then good for her. Joanie is past her prime, but she is great to see at races. Deena is entering that same level as a grand dame of the sport.
I think you should retire from your pathetic job. You are not going to accomplish anything else.
Did you ever once consider that as the current AR holder and former record holder in the 10k that she might get interviewed more than others? Do you expect her to not answer the questions honestly? Seems like you're the asshole.
Hey, its fine with me if she answers questions honestly, says shes ready to go, feeling great. If she had been kicking ass and taking names for the past 2-3 years, then saying that she'll run a new AR or win Chicago or is ready for a podium finish in the Oly's is a great, confident answer and one that I LOVE to hear from runners.
But she HASN'T been running great. She's been very fragile, has underperformed and DNF'd in big races in the past few years. AND THATS OK! It happens to everyone, from big time runners like Kastor to the back of the packers.
Throwing out the big time/performance goals (I remember there being others besides the 2:18 one) when you've underperformed so drastically in recent results is, in fact, being an asshole.
If Usain Bolt starts spouting about running sub 9.5 or winning 8 gold medals next Olympics, HE CAN DO THAT! He's the best ever! But if Doc Patton stated running his mouth about being the best in the world, it would be a truly poor decision.
Deena needs to say she's fit, raring to go, ready to kick ass. But shes climbing back to the top, and shouldnt do this to herself.

That's money that could be spent on more prize money or paying to help fly in/provide accomodations for up-and-coming runners who are striving to achieve their dream. She's already achieved it. Move on. Bob Kennedy knew when to hang it up.
Deena's younger than that Romanian babe who won the gold medal in the marathon in Beijing.
Well I guess I'll throw myself to the wolves here. You guys need to show a little repsect. when you've got a few AR's and an olympic medal then you can open your mouths. Until then shut the f*** up and show a little respect.

If Deena runs sub 2:24, I am willing to hook up with Caster Semenya. I will be either the pitcher or the catcher whatever he/she prefers.
Be careful making statements like this. Remember the guy who said he would eat his own poop if Craig Mottram medaled in the 2005 World Championships? Are you guys going to man up to your promises if need be? Just saying...
