I say YESSSSSSSSSS. She has lowered herself to nothing more than a promo queen that has no intention on delivering.
Kastor, 36, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., currently owns the American women’s marathon record (2:19:36), a title she first earned at the 2003 London Marathon (2:21:16) and narrowly missed lowering in her 2005 Chicago Marathon victory (2:21:25). A runner since the age of 11, Kastor has enjoyed a decorated professional career, but still has a few specific goals she hopes to achieve including a sub-2:18 marathon. Hitting that mark would once again lower the American record – something she is aiming to do in Chicago.
Is Kastor all hot air?

What?

If Kastor runs sub 2:18 I will cut my balls off. And film it, BME pain olympics style.
-
I believe that Deena will not run within 10 minutes of her stated goal. If that is the case then we know that the goal was 100% bull shit.
-
If Deena runs sub 2:24, I am willing to hook up with Caster Semenya. I will be either the pitcher or the catcher whatever he/she prefers.

I predict you will feel very badly about yourself when Caster turns you down. -
And my guess?
Deena is faster than you from 5K all the way through the marathon. Until you own every American Record from 5K through the marathon I suggest you show just a tad of respect...she's fit. Mammoth crew said she's in great shape. Weather looks lousy in Chicago (windy) but Deena will be tough to beat. -
GO DEENA!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Yeah, just another person with nothing to back her talk up but AR's and international medals. I mean, hey, she barely qualified for the men's Oly Trials.
-
What do you expect her to say? "My training has gone very well, but I am basically a shadow of my former self and have not shot at the AR. I am hoping for a slow tactical race to I can win with a 2:28. Otherwise, I will get my ass beat by an undertrained Mikitenko and a fading Grigoriyeva."
Come on. It is a marathon. She wants to go into it with her competitors thinking that she is ready to stomp on them. And, if she is healthy, a new AR is not impossible. -
Either Deena Kastor or Joan Benoit is greatest American woman marathoner of all time, and Kastor has done the sport a huge amount of good, so show some respect.
She's had a long career and and had some injury problems, but I wouldn't discount what she can do if she is fully healthy.
She's also a positive, optimistic person and believes in the power of positive self-talk and shooting for big goals, and I expect that attitude has worked a lot better for her than the relentless negativity that some people on these boards display has worked for them. -
There's no question Joan Benoit is the greatest American woman marathoner of all time. Deena is a distant second.
-
I tend to agree for non-quantitative reasons, but Deena has the AR and has had a terrific career in a women's distance running scene that is more competitive than in Benoit's era.
-
To be on the safe side you should cut them off regardless how DK does.
-
Better to be a has been than a never was.

Re: The OP. But it is never nice to be an asshole.
-
You mean like DK's incident with that Paso Robles race director?
-
And what American record have you set?? I think anyone who can even keep the passion for competitive racing at 36 is doing pretty well! I wish her the best of luck with her marathon goals, and I think it's the awesome that she's trying to get the most out of her God-given talent!
-
I hate when athletes share their unrealistic goals.
-
You guys are like a bunch of piranhas on raw meat with regard to the OP. Lighten up. When in doubt attack the running credentials of the poster.
Why so emotional? If he had said that Brett Favre was washed up and should retire, would you respond by questioning how many Superbowls the OP has won?
