I ride a 56/44 Dura ace crankset and have never felt like I needed a smaller crank to deal with hills. What size cassette are you using?

Get whatever you like. A triple ring doesn't make you a dork, and riding single-speeds and fixies doesn't make you a stud.
My double-ring bike has a climbing ring on the rear cassette so I can still slog up a long climb if I need to. I use it for short rides. I use my triple if I'm touring or on shorter rides with beastly hills. I also have a 1x6 for running to the grocery store and a single-speed for farting around town. A quiver of bikes is better than one.
