I'm too weak to quik smoking. I promised my wife I'd quit, but who keeps promises anyway. Don't smoke like me.

5 Presidents will have addressed schools through television - going back to Reagan. I've never heard of it being a problem before.
How would you like to explain it?
When George HW Bush made a similar speech to students Dick Gephardt got pretty pissed about it. So just because you've never heard of it being a problem before doesn't mean it's never been a problem before.
so, Dick Gephart had a hissy fit...anyone else? or is that all you got?
I actually have some respect for genuine conservatives, but they're few and far between now and they're certainly not the one in control of the opposition party at present.

Just the majority leader of the House, nobody important or anything.
When no one knew what the speech was going to say, it was about the speech. When the speech was released, and there was nothing wrong with it, it wasn't about the speech, it was about the classroom follow-up to the speech. Now that we've seen the follow-up syllabus, and can see that is in fact NOT what you just claimed it was, what will it be about next?
By the way, your grammar is atrocious.

as long as it is the correct card to play.

Turn on the radio and flip to an a.m. station...there's a dumbed down movement in our country, fueled by hatred, ignorance, fear and lies. It's really sad. Race definitely adds fuel to the fire, but the fire would be there no matter what.
I can't imagine raising my child to avoid any situation in life where someone could possibly say something that you don't agree with.
people are freaking out because they are afraid that their kid might actually not hate obama when they see the speech. this scares the crap out of parents who keep telling the kid how bad the guy is.
i also think the race card is being rightfully played here by the wacko parents who can't stand seeing someone who doesn't look like them as president.
I think it is clear what conservatives don't like about the speech. Obama talks about curing cancer (no problem there), then goes onto AIDS (the gay plague, sent from God to punish the wicked), new energy (oil is the only solution to our energy woes, Drill, Baby, Drill), and the environment (we are stewards of the earth according to the bible, which means it is here for our pleasure--not for us to take care of. After all we are not tree hugging hippies). All that with math and science.
Then he goes onto critical thinking (a problem in and of itself, because it implies you can't forge your own reality). Fight poverty and homelessness (it is their own problem they are poor and homeless, and people who aren't shouldn't help them. Jesus probably said something about it when curing the blind and lepers.), crime and discrimination (there is no such thing as discrimination that is just liberal hype and political correctness, and the only solution to crime is more gun, especially in Sudan, and killing more people, that is why the crime rate in Europe is so high), make the US more fair and more free (the US is already the best country the world has or will ever see, therefore it cannot become better.)
The only good thing was building companies because what is good for GM is good for America.
"You’ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment. You’ll need the insights and critical thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination, and make our nation more fair and more free. You’ll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy. "
I have no problem with Obama giving a speech. What harm could possibly be done. After all he's
1. Ruined our economy by spending way too much.
2. Ruining health care
3. Wants to take away free speech.
So yeah brainwashing little kids should be the last of our worries that this power hungry maniac is doing.

1-3 are debatable, but that's no the focus of this thread. So how exactly is the speech or the DOE study guide "brainwashing" little kids?
my grammar is just fine...last i checked this wasn't english class. i type and don't bother to fix my mistakes cause its not worth my time. its fun to see how many people address grammar, can't you come up with anything else?
take a look at how things were changed...

Google the following:
The Paranoid Style in American Politics
which includes the following:
American politics has often been an arena for angry minds. In recent years we have seen angry minds at work mainly among extreme right-wingers, who have now demonstrated in the (fill in name here) movement how much political leverage can be got out of the animosities and passions of a small minority. But behind this I believe there is a style of mind that is far from new and that is not necessarily right-wing. I call it the paranoid style simply because no other word adequately evokes the sense of heated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy that I have in mind.
Originally, (fill in name here) was Goldwater. But use Limbaugh, Beck, Bush, Schafly, Birch, Nixon, McCarthy, whatever you want. It's all the same.
that would be a great point had they released the speach when the issue presented itself. They have been given 4-5 days to tweak and sanitize it. Our Sup is black and it won't be shown-first day of school and more important things to worry about. My job is to stress the importance of school to my own kids. For those who don't have that type of support; we legal American laborers and service industry employees who are fluent in English too.
Glen Beck is the new leader of all the racist Yahoos out there that are making fools of themselves and Fox News is playing like a fiddle with Rupert Murdoch, Hannity, Oreilly, Beck et all....laughing all the way to the bank. The are all New Yorkers, living in NYC and in their personal lives and bank accounts have more in common with the beltway liberals that they love to crucify and then laugh about under their breath. Think of All Star Professional Wrestling. That's what the media has become.
It's not that one disagrees with the content's of Obamas speech, but rather inasmuch that the man is trying to fuel LIBERAL agenda down young childs throats. Thus, this basically constitutes an extremely form of brainwashing.

If that is what you really believe, there is no hope for you. People like you are tearing the country apart. You need to really look deep into your soul and examine your attitudes toward a lot of things. God be with you.
Obvious satire- hence name of Typical Conservative and use of the word "inasmuch" and capitalization of "liberal".
I'm at work when Beck is on, so I'll have to defer to you since you're familar with his program. I watch Fox occassionally and don't disagree with many of his comments, but certainly don't agree with the style. My degree is in journalism and I can't imagine what the kids go through today to attain it because there are few true journalist left; inclusive of Olberman and Maddow. It's all a circus so we all better get used to it.
Did you hear that Van Jones resigned? No you wouldn't have because the networks, MSNBC and CNN didn't report it.
How dare you insinuate that I am not with God. I happen to be a born-again Christian who has reunited with religion & God. Just because you believe in the indoctrination of our young children does NOT mean that we, those who advocate democracy and real-politik ideologies, have to put up with such liberal propaganda.
I consider myself a liberal and an ex-Obama supporter. As a voter for Obama in the 2008 presidential election, I believed Obama was capable of bringing great change to this country - a land where racial relations would improve, a land of peace, happiness, and pursuit of property. Thus, I am dismayed when instead of influencing public policy on issues such as Health Care and Gun Control, he is rather focusing on trying to brainwash our children. As an empathetic man, putting myself in a conservatives' shoes I can see why he would rather his children not view the television broadcast, but no, all the liberals then have to spew off nonsense on how these "true Americans" are radical racists.
