Training makes you fitter and faster, but it doesn't make you world-class fast. If it did, half the people on these boards who claim to be doing 70+ miles a week with lots of Lydiard buildup would be right on Ritz's heels, say 12:58. The sub-13:00 formula is easy: Find a runner with massive aerobic and speed talent, and train him just enough to maximize that talent. That's why 19- and 20-yr olds from Ethiopia and Kenya can run sub 13:00 and win Falmouth and NYC Half Marathon races while smiling to the crowds.
Ritz has had at least 4 coaches since high school, and has at many times run fast under each of them. So who is the best coach for him? Or do you think, just maybe (sarcasm), that Ritz is so talented he can run fast under any coach or training system as long as he's healthy? That would be my guess.
Do you think Alan Webb proved his talent in high school? Ryan Hall? Teg? German Fernandez? I'd have to say YES to all of them. These are the guys with talent. They have the ability to run fast. Distance running is a simple sport, and the cream rises to the top. The rest, the training, is no big deal. You gotta do it. You gotta use a little common sense. But it doesn't really matter what your coach's name is. You only have to believe that he knows what he's doing.
