You need both, in the right amounts, and at the proper points in your training.
Endurance with no Speed and Speed with no Endurance are dead ends for improvement.
I agree although I do think that this gives some credibility to the idea that long term aerobic development and marathon training can lead to great results in the middle distances.
Ritz is simply a great athlete and has been for years. I thought he should have waited to do the marathon anyway but this at least proves he is still very potent on the track as well. It also disproves the idea that high mileage in high school will lead to burnout. You have to believe in yourself and enjoy what you do or the mileage is all for naught..
I will say this though.. I hadn't read that article by Salazar before and it is a bit suspect to say the least. He does make some very intelligent points.
