In more than one of the race recaps I've read recently, I've read the word "pretender" used to describe some of the best athletes in the world. The latest was in the men's 5k recap, "The pace increased around the turn and on the backstretch, the contenders separated themselves from the pretenders." Ok, so it rhymes, but this is the last lap of the finals of The World Championships 5K. To call any of these guys pretenders -- I can barely find the words. I find it disrespectful to the athletes. The need to put people down smacks of highschool insecurity, and the writer isn't even a member of the club himself. Pick a better way to phrase it. Maybe talk about the astounding abilities of Bekele or the absurdly fast pace, but to call these guys "pretenders"? Jeez.
