Other than the short warmup and equally short cool-down, that doesn't look dumb at all. Most people need at least 12 minutes of progressive warmup (20 minutes is often better), more short strides (maybe add some drills prior to the strides for ROM warmup and for variety) and 10-15 minutes of regressive (gradual slowing down near the end) cooling down.
Try it this way:
200 @ roughly 3k-5k race pace
200 @ roughly 1,500 pace
2 x 800 @ 3k pace or slightly faster
2 x mile (1,600) @ 5k pace
800 @ 3k pace or faster
400 @ 3k pace or faster
400 as fast as you want
That's over 4 miles of running at 5k pace pace or faster. If the rest periods are fixed (which they shouldn't really be), you can play around with the speeds to make it a good workout.
Let's say your personal bests are 4:00 (1,500), 8:37.5 3k and 15:00 5k. All fairly comparable times and all nice multiples of integer 400 splits - 64 pace, 69 pace and 72 pace. Your workout might look like this:
2 x 200 @ 36, 32 (I'd use more short warmup strides than 4 x 75 before this if you were only doing 2 x 200, but whatever)
2 x 800 @ 2:18, 2:16
2 x 1,600 @ 4:48
800 @ 2:16
2 x 400 @ 67, 62
This might seem a little easy for some people that are used to doing really hard repetition workouts or workouts that use the same distances and the same rest intervals. But if it's treated as a day of medium effort pace work and it's inserted along with other bulky workouts (like a couple of 7-8 mile "tempo" runs) during the week, it's going to be pretty useful, especially when it comes time to run more 800 reps at 3k pace or 1,600 reps at 5k pace. Sometimes it's better to work out too easy than too hard. Just because you can do something more impressive doesn't mean you should.
On another hand, for some guy who races a lot better than he works out, this might be a tough workout. In that case, it can be treated as such and more recovery might be needed between surrounding workouts.
Hey, it's pretty much just putting one foot in front of the other at 3k-5k race pace and doing it for longer than 3k-5k worth of work. It's all flour for your mill.
