At practice, i consistently finish right next to our top guys during hard workouts. When it comes to race day, I dont do nearly as well, often losing to people who I usually beat in practice. Does this just mean I am bad at racing? Or mabye I am pushing myself to hard at practice? At the beginning of indoor i ran a 4:51 mile. By the end of outdoor I PRed and ran a 4:49. I really expected more. After hard workouts, I feel as though i should easily be able to run in the low 40's.
Just because you are the type of person that is motivated to post this question, I think you are 100% working out too hard. The #1 mistake people make is they want it to bad and don't allow enough recovery.
You clearly want it badly as you are coming on here to post.
I highly recommend reading Wejo's article. In hindsight, He races all of his workouts in college basically. Back off, run more in the base phase and take your easy days easy.
Additionally, chill out. One reason wejo ended up being so good was he took it easy in HS. I was overdoing and getting hurt. Meanwhile I thought he was being 'lazy' in 10th grade when he didn't go from zero miles in the summer to 50 in season as I did.
In hindsight, he was being smart and building gradually. If you stay healthy and keep getting better, eventually you will be good.
