too bad german fernandez would've gone 3:33
And he would have gone 13:19 if he could have run faster at USA's.
One thing that is sure, Ulrey ran a lot of efforts this year, good for him getting in there and despite a 12th gets his "A" and not marginally , at 22 and he did run 1:48 on a triple he is a good prospect for the U.S.
Also probably generates more German hype as he beat Dorian every time, surely he can run close to this as a still 18 year old.
What the 12th place does is magnify the difference from 3:31.x guys to 3:35 guys nothing more nothing less.
The U.S. only has two legit right now 3:34 and 3:35 guys, period. We should have more by now 35 yearsplus from Ryun and Liquori who ran 3:52 yards a long time ago.
Webb and Lukezic seemed right there on the elite level no less than 2-3 years ago, now our fastest is 3:34.x manzano, and guys who cannot run it every time out of the box.

I believe he beat him twice right? Once at the first race of indoors after sitting on him for most of the race and the 2nd at NCAA's when Dorian ran the flu. German may beat him every time from here on out, but the first two are not exactly the fairest of showings.
Am I not correct in the fact that Ulrey was one of only two people to beat Rupp in the indoor season? I don't think he got in a rut. He's just been building up to this moment. And man can he run!

Actually he said in interviews that his confidence to a big beating after getting rocked by Rupp indoors, thinking how could he get beat like that by a 5K-10K guy? Took him some time to get his head around that, probably helped that Rupp was racing and beating 3:37 guys at conference and regionals.
At NCAA's Dorian had a stomach flu during the final and was pretty amazed that he finished as strong as he did.
I remember when he was running that indoor mile at the Tyson meet and was in a great position with a lap to go and he looked great, but got tripped up by Myers, that Ulrey was going to have a big finish. He just went into a funk after NCAA's and finally returned to form now.
watching a few videos of this guy leaves me with a few impressions: 1) up and coming talent! 2)sure seems to fixate on how bad he feels, before, during and after a race, 3) will not make it past 1st round in Berlin. Not ready for the big boys yet.
3:35 is a fantastic mark for a guy who a little over a year ago was pretty much an unknown.
He's been one of the most consistently competitive collegiate guys in the mile/1500 this year. 3:57 indoors, 3rd Indoor Champs, 4th Outdoors, 3rd USATF, now this huge PR (who cares about his place here, he's just a young gun out of his league trying to get pulled along to the A Standard). He'll probably get killed in Berlin, but who cares, he's had a great year.
There is so much negativity on this board when someone runs a PB. Can a guy get in a fast race, achieve his goal time of the A standard, and not be hated on or compared to another runner? Be more positive on this guy, he's accomplished a lot already. And he will be suiting up in a USA jersey in Berlin while we all sit home and watch the internet feed, great work Dorian...

Lagat makes 3, just a small oversight.
Hopefully Lomong will jump into some races and get a fast time in there too. I would be baffled if he goes to Berlin without any European races under his belt. He's no medal threat so he may as well work on his PR. Same advice for Manzano.
Webb can still line up and get a fast time, I think. No idea what he is doing.
Awesome confidence boost for Ulrey. That's how you make a team. Race for third and go get the A standard.
FOUR Americans in the World Championship 1500m!

Good list. Ulrey is 1st American at this point of the year, in the leadup to Worlds where it counts, rather than ending his season at a college d1 meet.
Ulrey is now 3.77 seconds FASTER than Fernandez.
Ulrey works hard, is outworking Fernandez, and is coming through where it counts.
And it is obvious he has a much better coach.

Port Byron is not Southern Illinois. It is almost directly west of Chicago, North of Moline near the Mississippi River.

Add Andrew Bumbalough's 3:38.xx from New York to that list.
I thought his name was Damien

Huh? Fernandez never had any plans of going to Worlds so NCAAs and USAs are where it counted for him. NCAA championship in the 1500 (over Ulrey) and a damn impressive AJR in the 5k. Both are great runners but the shit you are saying is just plain stupid.

Going for the AJR in the 5k, instead of going for World's like Ulrey in the 1500m, was a wimpy move. Skip out on Indoor NCAAs for World JUNIOR XC, but outdoor NCAAs are more important than senior USAs and senior World Outdoors?! Pretend to be going back to training in order to focus on XC, in order to fake out Chris Derrick, and get an AJR.
Wait. You list the top collegiate times and say Ulrey does it now when it counts.
For collegiates it counts during the collegiate season. So it doesn't count now.

German chose the college based on training for and going to World competitions, because the World meets are most important to him. Did you forget him twice going to World cross country already. His choosing OSU was partially based on that assurance by Smith.
The choice to focus on the 1500 and NCAA's was Smith's idea not German's.

Never mind, re-watched the start and they said "3:59" which gave it away. I definitely did not recognize her in non-track attire.

In that case, Ulrey just finished second to last "where it counts" and is about to get knocked out in the 1st round "where it counts."
