Does anyone have proof/link about the GA sub 4 mile?? Being from Georgia, I have always heard (from multiple creditable coaches/athletes) that no one has run under 4 in the state of Georgia. Just curious.
I saw Morceli do it. IAAF Grand Prix Meet held in Olympic Stadium a few weeks before the '96 Olympic Trials.
A correction to your list. The 3:50.7 run by Morceli in Birmingham was in England, not Alabama.
I seem to be a few minutes late on everything today.
OK, this is as good as I can get it. I'm pretty sure about those with dates after them in the format d mmm yy.

Wilson Waigwa ran 3:58.3 in Charleston on 12 Jun 76, but no one seems to know what state it is in, WV or SC or other.
The ?? after Tennessee and Texas are because pela's list doesn't include them. I'm guessing they are on oversized tracks, so he didn't put them in.
I'm curious about the NJ record by Coghlan. I looked on Wikipedia and it said he ran it at an indoor meet at the Meadowlands indoor arena. I have lived in NJ (in a town in the Meadowlands) for years and I have never heard of an indoor meet being held there. Especially one of indoor mile world record setting quality. Anyone care to share any info about the event? Sorry for my ignorance.
Last I heard no one's gone under 4:00 in Bama. David Kimani got close years ago, but he went out in 2:07 and killed his chances, although he did finish in 1:54. He split 3:52 on a DMR leg but those don't count.
As far as I know the record is 4:01 and change.
Those are results from the 2000 Mobile Meet of Champions. Kimani ran 4:01.46. I don't think he was even leading the race at the mile mark.
Either way, I'll submit the Alabama soil record as 4:01.46.
I was surprised to see Brian Pope listed as Mississippi's all-time mile leader. I went to the Ole Miss website. Here are the all-time Ole Miss statistics. If Pope holds the state record--and he might--he must have set his time in an all-comers meet, after he graduated.

Back in 2002 when I first compiled this list there were only 251 US sub 4:00s. Now we're up to 328. As some have guessed, it's based on where each athlete graduated from high school. This sometimes causes confusion - for example, Wheating's Kimball Union Academy is located in NH so they get the credit rather than VT where he apparently resided.
Here's the list updated through June 7 (Evan Jager #328). Please reply with any updates/corrections.

I have a similar list & believe we match now. The TX time was run on an oversized track in the old Astrodome and the TN mark was also oversized at ETSU. Waigwa's time was run in SC. I have Kimani's 4:01 that someone mentioned for AL.
I've added everyone else that broke 3:42.22 for the 1500. I'm just missing the high school/state and graduation year for a few. Anyone know where these guys went to high school? School, state, class of?
Greg Reynolds 1983 (year under 3:42.22)
Jim Luth 1982
Jim Gorman 1972
John Clark 1976
Jeff Jaynes 1985

Pretty sure Waigwa's time was in Charelston WV a week after NCAA's. Tom Duits of Western Michigan and Steve Lacy of Wisconsin also ran.

Olympic Invitational moved from MSG 78-79 or so.
Carl Lewis singing the Star Spangled Banner at the Vitalas Invitational is classic.
Manzano ran 3:55.29 in Missouri this year
I never went sub 4 for a mile but saw your thread where your taking 1500 times under 3:42.22, soooo I ran 3:41.3 in 1991, graduated from Billings Senior High, Billings Montana, 1983.....had to give Montana a lil more representation
Some updates to the list that I posted above, based on further info provided.
Alabama: 4:01.46 David Kimani 1 Apr 00
Florida: 3:57.52i Mark Carroll 22 Jan 99
Missouri: 3:55.29 Leonel Manzano 23 May 09
West Virgina: 3:58.3 Wilson Waigwa 12 Jun 76
Kind of odd that the fastest mile in Florida was run indoors. I think it was upper 70s outside when he did it.
The Waigwa info came from this thread on TFN:
