I believe the record for West Virginia is 3:39 by Casey Batey.
It helps to have hills in your state.

I was certain that Don Clary who went to HS in Alaska had broken 4. I guess my memory is failing me, as is my googling skills. What was Clary's best mile?

UTAH almost 4:00.06 Eamon Coughlan

In 1973 or 1974, I watched what was publicized as an attempt at the "First Sub-4-Minute Outdoor Mile in New York State." Marty Liquori and Dick Buerkle were on pace with 200m to go, but were blasted by a gust of wind coming off the last turn ... final time was something like 4:00.3.
Whoa ! The national AAU meet was at Randall's Island in New York City in 1966, and some guy named Jim Ryun won in 3:58.6. So if what you say above was actually publicized as you've stated, somebody did not know what they were talking about.
Meet had also been there in1961 but Dyrol Burleson won in a tactical 4:04.
I was sure Dan Lincoln went sub-4 and he's an AR native
Alabama has had citizens run under 4:00 (Steve Bolt) but no one as far as I know has gone under 4:00 on Bama soil. I remember being at a meet in H.S. where the late, great David Kimani tried to break 4:00 when he was at South Alabama. He ran the first half with the other guys and came through at 2:07, then he kicked in a 1:53-1:54 and ran 4:00 high or 4:01 low.
Russell Brown (Hanover) and Sean O'Brien (Tilton) have both broken 4:00.00 within the past six months, so New Hampshire now has two sub-four natives to its credit. As for the prospect of anyone from anywhere breaking four in a meet on N.H. soil, either a meet of Maine Distance Festival caliber will have to be set up or some collegiate mutant will eventually do it solo indoors at Leverone.
Add this one to the list:
MT (1) - Scott McGowan
He's the only native Montanan to break 4:00, and as far as I know, 4:00 has never been broken on MT soil.
I dispute the sub 4 mile in New Hampshire. Numerous sub-4's.

If certified road miles count, a sub-4 has been run in HI. Late 90's.
I agree; both Marc Davis and Graham Hood have run sub 4 on the road in Hawaii.

I know that you're just kidding about California, but I've personally witnessed dozens of sub 4's in this state including sub 4's by CA high schooler Matt Guisto, and numerous CA collegians including Jamey Harris and several Stanford runners.
Is that a typo about Matt Guisto? Or do you always consider him a HS'er even after HS?
it has never been done in wisconsin.

There has never been a 4 minute mile run in VT. A vermonter has never broken 4 minutes in the mile. THough tim simpson ran a 4 min 1600 on a relay and eric morse ran 343 in the 1500...
What about Bruce Hyde?
Sub 4 min milers within Oregon should include (17) Michael McGrath.

I don't think one has been run in New Hampshire, or Delaware.
i know for a fact that it has been done in utah! ever heard of ed eyestone or doug padilla?
didnt tendenkamp and solinsky break 4 in wisconsin like 2 weeks ago?
"What about Bruce Hyde?"
Never broke 4, got damn close though. It's a shame he hung 'em up.
Didn't Lagat run a 3:49 indoors in Fayetteville last year?
Said Achmed (from Arkansas) has run sub 4 so add him to the sub 4 from MA class.....
Also SD has had sub 4 mile I think? From legends Billy Mills did it, I have heard.
