Most female distance runners I have met training over 50 miles per week do not have their period unless they are on the pill. They appear to have healthy BMI's, ie. not anorexic. This is a topic for vigorous discussion.

Shows how in touch I am...I thought we were talking about the use of punctuation.
Just because it is common doesn't make it normal or healthy. Athletic ammenorhea (sp?) could lead to stress fractures, weak bones, etc... or it could just be a sign of over training/not eating right
The young boys may want to leave the room cause the following might make your eyes bleed.
I run about 50mpw and have a pretty regular period with a VERY short cycle (~14 days, i.e. 2 periods a month). However, my periods are really light. The funny thing is that when I was running less (30 mpw and doing a fair amount of cross training), I got my period once every 40 or so days and it was heavy and horrible. I've been checked up and down by lots of docs, no problems really. Just a PITA to get it so often.
For me at least, running more equals MORE periods, not fewer. Could be a stress thing or something. FWIW I am a normal weight maybe on the thin side, BMI 18.8. Admittedly, I don't eat very much.
I think it's different for everyone. I guess the important thing is whatever your period may be to keep up on iron and calcium and if you have a weird period, get your hormones checked so you avoid stress fractures.

There's been no direct association with ammenorreah and injury. Conditions that can bring about ammenorreah can be dangerous (such as not eating enough) but if you're diet is healthy and you simply run/workout a lot, ammenorreah is a healthy reaction that suspends the reproductive process because there aren't enough surplus carbohydrates available to support a ealthy pregnancy. So ammenorreah itself is not a good or bad thing: what causes it can be bad or benign.
