I have come to the conclusion that daniel's 180 strides/minute is about as correct as 220-age is for max heart rate.
I believe Daniels originally got that number pointing out that something like 99% of the Olympians at whichever games he went to strode at AT LEAST 180 strides/minute, if you count most elite runners will take more than that (this is notable in that if you watch a high school meet, you will see many runners taking fewer than 180 strides/minute, and that even very tall elite runners seem to take at least that many strides). Additionally, at very slow paces your stride rate will vary with pace, but beyond a certain point stride rate tends to remain stable.
