his legs seem much more muscular then the typical kenyan runner.
also his form seems different.
clearly it works for him though!

The last I heard he is still in Japan training? That could have something to do with it. Other than that I really don't know, but, yes, he doesn't run like most Kenyans. It works for him obviously.
Also, that video was awesome, thanks for the link! I loved the part at 2:50, quick wave to the fans and I think he even slapped a high-five to one of them.
And Kebede is even faster once he gets going, 195-205/minute
I have come to the conclusion that daniel's 180 strides/minute is about as correct as 220-age is for max heart rate.
On a side note, a friend of mine told me that on Monday, April 27, he met Wanjiru in March '09 in a pub. The guy, according to this friend of mine, is a heavy drinker (alcohol).
Wanjiru hails from my home area and so is this gentleman.
THe guy will party till midnight, go to sleep, then, wake up at five, get dropped at a place called Rumuruti (it is exactly 42km from Nyahururu town) and run back (depending on his training.
He is perhaps the most famous person in town today, perhaps only second to Bishop Luigi Paiaro who's been there for over fourty years (Nyahururu Parish).

Muscular legs is typical with people who train in shorts and vests(singlets). I know that because I was there. It was not until I started training in heavy sweats did I start to look like a distance runner. Often when I showed up for a race, the langy athletes would crack a joke on me like, "The soccer game has been postponed. Go home!" I pretty much looked like a soccer player. Needless to say, I still beat many of these jokers in that race. I think sweat clothes help in keeping athletes "skinny". Americans runners often wonder why Kenyans show up for a race in summer wearing sweat pants. Sammy probably does train in shorts and singlets, I don't know.
With his running style, I think if he can adjust his running form a little, he will be able to run faster. With the current form, he looks like he is sprinting all the way. That got to be tough.
Really?

I thought Mikitenko looked like she was sprinting.
He looks pretty relaxed even with high turnover. I agree the 180 step/minute thing is false. Too many variables determine turnover, one being leg length: Two runners travelling at 7min/mile pace, a woman 5'0" with 28" legs and a 6'5" male with 36" legs. Turnover is gonna be different. If the guy is doing 180 then the female is gonna need 190+. Female doing 180 male has to be doing 160ish.
on the assumption that your post isn't intended to be, ahem, 'funny' ...
could you please explain to me, in the broadest terms possible, the correlation between wearing sweat pants and having skinny legs. I'm intrigued
Sammy does have more of an upright form that most of the elite level kenyans. But one can watch Sam Chelanga run and see the same kind of form - very upright, shorter strides. Obviously it works for those particular runners. Sammy is also more muscular. But then, remember, he is not Kalenjin, he is Luo.
his legs look like mine. he actually has quad muscles. his form can show that form isn't all that important.
Actually, he's a Kikuyu. Not that that has much to do with appearing to be more muscular. Much more to do with the guy being seriously short.
Oh that's right...Kikuyu. sorry bout that.
It may contribute somewhat to his thicker frame, as compared to kalenjins, though. Kalenjin people are very very skinny. I'm not saying Sammy is some kind of beast, in fact, compared to the typical american, he's skinny, too, but his ethnicity very well could play a role in his build.
I like Sammy's form, he looks fantastic, especially for the marathon.

Wanjiru's relatively big calves give me hope.

that was awesome! Sprinting into the stadium with no one around, with a fist to the crowd and then running the last 200m in 30-31 seconds after 26 miles of heat and exhaustion with no one to run with for no other reason then to give it his all...just awesome.
and look at that incredible surge thrown in from 1:06-1:25...incredible! We are looking at the greatest marathoner of all time, without a doubt.
This also gives a glimpse at the terrible commenting...especially when the commentator looks at the 30k split of 1:28 and somehow thinks it predicts a 2:08...idiot.
Leg length is not the final determinant of STRIDE length.

No, but it is still a big factor, maybe the biggest factor in well trained athletes running at the same pace.

This makes me feel better. I can hit the 180 steps per minute mark if running at 6 min pace, but at 8 min pace am at about 160-165.
