Blood doping didn't work. The athletes who tried it usually became weak and sick. Why all the fuss now?
That's true. Most of the people who tried it would end up getting symptoms that matched a bad flu. It reminded me of Kipketer and his "malaria" attack that he had that sidelined him for awhile, but the symptoms didn't match malaria. They matched, eh, something else being overdone or overused. But I guess that isn't PC to mention.
Seems to be that blood doping works for some athletes, not others, and shades of grey in between. The same can be said of lots of training techniques, legal and otherwise. There's lots of other factors and maybe Viren was just very lucky the stars aligned (including doping)in 72 and 76.
Sorry, but I, for one, just never believed elites gave less than 100% in other races just to 'peak' at the OLYS. Why on earth waste 95% of your peak years races with the risk you'll have an off day when you want to show the world your 100%? Foolish.
...except the marathon. Makes no sense to even finish the OLYS if you're having an off day!
funny how much medial details of blood doping Viren's coach has for a guy who's athlete didn't do it, seems to know the science of it WAY too intimately.
this is a case where Viren doesn't pass the smell test, and the smell got worse as time went on.
i haven't found finns to have a particular love of ethics and the truth, compared to their dark sense of humor and joy at obsfuscation...
he'll always be a suspcious historical figure...
All you people who just got done watching "Prefontaine" or 'Without Limits" and are all fired up now just calm down and "Breathe in, Breathe Out." and move on.
I love I cna do nothing's repsonses
He is quite persuausive with his argument
There is no "dope" involved in blood doping. No drugs, just a runner's own blood re-used.
Should be legal.

?????????????
Haven't seen any mentioning about Viren's coach in this list. Mr Peltokallio mentioned earlier is a well-known Finnish medical doctor. Viren's coach was Mr Rolf Haikkola, national level runner from the 50's.
I simply can't say anything about the possible blood doping in the 70's. However, I'm surprised about all these strong arguments only relying to Viren's performance in the years 73-75. In many ways, life and athletics was different that time. Runners did not even tried to reach their records in every race, pacemakers were generally not used, etc...
Somehow I got the assumption that this discussion is motivated by the Prefontaine's missed medal and Shorter's missed gold. Try to get it over, it's only sports...
By the way, I just wonder how it's possible that the small and poor Finland could have so good technology of blood transfusion that they beat the nation first on the moon?

Please dont procreate.
Shorter lost to Viren, so obviously he is going to be the biggest bitch about the fact that Viren "may" have cheated.
Pre lost to Viren, so the legions of 12-40 year olds all stand before Shorter in the defense that he was "cheating"
But it's all just controversy until you get admittance that he used some technique that later became illegal or some proof other than,
"Well my sister's brother's mother's doctor that gave him a physical overheard from a friend that is in porn that had sex with a drunk in a bathroom with a whore than knew a drug dealer than knew a pharmacist that knew a doctor that helped Viren with the procedure."
As far as I'm concerned, Viren is as guilty as Lance Armstrong, Bolt, Bekele, and Ritz.
Where have you ever seen a quote from Shorter accusing Viren of anything?

Dat's right!!! America is No. 1IN EVERYTHING!!! If you beat us, its because you are doping. We have the best of everything! I know that because I heard it on Rush Linbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and Glenn Beck. USA! USA! USA!
It's quiet in Finland, too quiet.
Note that blooding doping wasn't banned(illegal) by IOC until 1986. As it wasn't illegal I'm sure many runners, including a bunch of American runners who made great marathon times, had tried blood doping. E.g. take a look at the sub 2:12 American finishers in 1983 NYC (same for Boston), all but gone in a year or 2.
A healthy Solinsky, Rupp, and Buster before 2008.
Pre would still be alive!!!
Perkele, a lot of bitter Americans here.
