i dont understand you people who come on here and act like this is not a big deal for these kids. Some of them prolly went to QU to run under scholarship money, they have a decent program. Yeah they are not getting the nations top 10 but they are getting a group of solid kids who might be able to do something in the future. If your coming on here and making stupid commments about how their team should get cut your just an asshole. Imagine seeing your school cut their program. Not every school can be as good as Providence or Iona but god damn lets not come on here and bash a team and its runners for trying. Give these guys some sympathy and do as i do in wishing for their program to be restored or at least something good to come out of the situation. To QU my best wishes i bid you well.
I haven't seen anyone contend that this isn't a "big deal for these kids" on this thread. I don't know what "something" you're referring to would be, though. Nobody's faulted them for "trying," either. Are these supposed to be compelling reasons for administrators to restore the funding? How are they supposed to find the money, use magic tricks? Something good will come out of the situation, you can count on it.
What and where is Quinnipiac??

hey bud lay off making fun, QU is in southern cnn near new haven, (known for its hockey) you guys should be ashamed, these kids read this board too ya kno, they found out yesterday so give them a break, they dont need to hear any criticism, we all should see this as a blow to the sport, not just the school, college track is winding down in small colleges, soon to be left in just huge ass state schools. remember your high school teams and remember the friends you had, well this is what is goin on right now, they are losing friends, trust and hope that they put 3 seasons into, just like any other college or high school.
You're correct that I don't have the mental horsepower to rebut you. No one does. You're a know-it-all. But the world is bigger than just you.
When I was in college the school tried to drop cross country. I really liked the place and had made good friends with the other distance runners. The cross country team was one of the main reasons I'd gone to school there. If it was gone I'd either have had to find other reasons to stay or gone somewhere else. I'd have survived as will the Quinnipiac kids.
We manged to keep the team so it was a moot point. But I would have been sad if I'd been forced to choose between staying at a school I liked or continuing with a sport I liked. The rest of the team felt the same way. Most of the Quinnipiac kids will likely feel that way. If something makes people feel sad that thing is sad. In your case it doesn't make you feel sad, so from a very narrow perspective, i.e, yours, it isn't sad. I understand that. Do you understand that growing up involves developing a measure of understanding and empathy for people other than yourself?
Excellent post. Thank you.
this is the last time i'm going to respond to you. i'm assuming this is the same biggot who has been poisening this thread with nothing better to do than comment on grammer, punctuation and people and situation he doesn't know anything about. maybe you're just looking for a reaction, so as i said this is the last time i'm responding to you. this isn't an english paper. no one is getting graded. i can type however i please. you aren't my teacher, you're not my mom, you aren't anywhere near as witty as you think you are (as evidenced by almost everyone who has responded to any of your asshole posts), you aren't intellegent (whooptif***ingdo i'll use as an example again) and you obviously aren't an athlete of any sort if you're talking like this to fellow runners. running is a botherhood, we stick up for each other. grow up, grow some nuts, and get a life man, instead of wasting your time being a dick and wasting everyone else's time with the shit that comes out of your mouth.

Finally, someone gets at least a part of it. Good post.
Sorry if my earlier comments offended anybody. It's just that I've always had a hard time figuring Jack out. 4:00 minute track nut who didn't seem to fight for track and the same thing is happening at QU. Can someone explain his stance in this? Why the huge support for Hockey over the running?
Someone commented that his kids are even on the team. By the way, historically, QU formerly QC was a basketball/baseball school. I was asked to take over the cross program in 1978 and refused because the then AD was already worried about it being a "compliance sport" and refused to even offer that it would have a budget.
at present time they are trying to get the cut switched to indoor. At least then they have more of a chance of salvaging the whole program. As far as Jack's involvement, from what is publicly known, it was not his call, nor was it a dean's call as an earlier post mentioned. Nor did the coach have any say, he found out right before the kids did. Jack does have a son on the team and another son is an asst coach. The call came from higher up in athletics and the the presidents office. It makes no sense and has crushed the kids on the team as well as the alumni. Hopefully more explanation then "budget issues" was given considering the team is one of the least funded teams at the school. The team and the coaching staff deserve much more then that. I wish them well.

Not sure what the other sports cost, but a report on today's news mentioned the vb team had a budget of $58,000. That doesn't seem like a lot to me.
if that vb 58k is true, what do you think the track team costs? A bunch of distance runners travelling throughout the northeast- I bet its significantly less than that
This from the moron who's wasting his time posting crap on Letsrun. You're so easy. Newsflash: NOTHING will come of this thread, it's nothing more than a bitch session for some angry skinny losers.
No, it's really about your lack of intelligence. Great set of priorities, no wonder you display such a low level of understanding reality. I can't empathize with the very narrow perspective that some affluent kids having their extracurricular activity dropped is really sad at all. It is what it is, get a grip and keep moving. Dwelling on it and moping about it is a nonconstructive response.

We do not need your voice here...
womens vball would run slim to none on 58 grand, if all there games were home maybe. The track team travels with the girls and definitly shares the same coach. What is bieng saved here? some cash for the kids shoes?
I'd like to make a point that cheerleading is NOT an NCAA sport and does not fulfill Title IX requirements.
They can have 500 girls on their cheerleading squad, and it would not help even things out. Historically, even up through the mid/late-80s, cheerleading was used by big time football schools as a way to dodge T-IX by claiming that their cheerleaders, who travel and recieve similar benefits as the football players, were part of their female sports budget, when in reality they were spending somewhere around 5% of their budget on female sports.
So, in this instance at the Q we see it is in no way a Title IX issue. The only Title IX situation would be that they wanted to remove Women's VB, and needed to drop two smaller/cheaper men's sports to comply with the rules.
This seems logical as you see they cite facility scheduling issues as a driver to the cuts. Yet, QU has no outdoor track and I doubt any other teams really want to use the local golf course. So, women's VB seems to be the source of that citation.
We see they cite cost, which obviously has little to do with Men's Track, as they have no equipment costs, simply shoes, travel and meet costs.
While Men's Golf isn't as cheap as Track, they seem to fall in the 'competitive aspirations' category. Which is also probably a side effect of wanting to cut VB, which is largely uncompetitive [5-30 this year]. Having this decision made from the high-up's it can be reasonably stated that the Men's Track program was 'uncompetitive' to an untrained eye. I dont think they have ever finished above 6th in the conference, which is impressive for a distance-only team, it doesn't look good for the guys who have the money.
I'm good friends and a competitor with the Q guys, and I've always respected their program. With a school similar to mine [Sacred Heart] they've built a very solid, competitive program. They don't go to NCAA's, and they aren't on any National Polls, but the show up on the Regional Poll almost every year, have a group of competitive New England runners, and do well for themselves in the enivronment they are in. If you want to say they suck b/c they can't compete with the PAC-10, Big East, ACC or other BCS conferences I would remind you that with only being D1 for 10 years, a small private university, in a weaker XC region, they have done just as well for themselves as a big state school with a program tradition and name recognition, big time funding [football programs] and a super competitive conference. It is very hard to recruit a 9:00 2miler in high school to go to a QU type school when Providence is knocking on their door as well. Not everyone has the same advantages.

A track team does cost money. I wish it cost 'nothing' like some are claiming. A minimum of coaches and travel/entry fees is needed for a team. This money comes from the college, most sports are a COST to colleges, nothing more. A few of the big football/basketball schools generate revenue, but even so, the 'other' sports at these schools, despite a big athletic budget, are still a COST.
Most colleges are dealing with huge budget cuts. As a college coach, I'm lucky that schools are willing to operate athletic programs...but coaches and sports probably should be cut before professors and educational costs.
It's still rough for the guys at QU (and other schools with similar scenarios), but these things are probably going to happen more frequently.
The people I know who have gone to Northeast Conference schools are far from affluent. One went through on whatever is the equivalent to the GI Bill. Three had fathers who worked in steel mills, a couple brothers had a father who was a truck driver, one has a father who is an accountant, another has a single mother who's a secretary. Yup, real elite bunch and deserving of any minor misfortune that come their way.
Ok. I'm done. Have the last word. Your kind always does.
I agree with most of what you said, but really "a weak cross country region....?" This is New England.
