As I'm working on the site for tomorrow, I just came across the Oregon entries for the MPSF (aka Pac 10) champs this weekend. Interesting to see Rupp and Wheating are both in the 800.
Predictions?

I give Rupp a lot of credit for going outside of his comfort zone and racing the 800. I doubt he can beat Wheating, but Wheating probably couldn't finish within 45 seconds of Rupp in a 10000.
Weating should win the duel but it seems like this could be a tuneup for a sub-4 attempt by Rupp.

Wheating would likely have difficulty finishing within 1:45 of Rupp in a 10,000.

this is not a duel, Wheating is actually more talented than Rupp overall even though people haven't relaized it yet. He would stomp Rupp. He went from 1:54 to 1:45 in 2 years. Sky is the limit.

Yeah, it was kind of a funny dig at the Rupp hate we see on the board.
As to Rupp vs Wheating. Must be a tune-up for Rupp, the guys who think he's going for a sub-4 soon are probably right. I wonder if Rupp worked at it if he'd be able to eventually break 1:50?
I don't think it's right to say Wheating is "more talented". He's more talented at the 800/1500 but we'll never see him challenge Rupp at the 5/10.

A warm up for the Pre Mile in early June. Rupp can run under 3:54.

I noticed that the mercados are entered in the 5K as well so not sure what they'll run, but if Luke and Centro want a qualifier maybe they'll rabbit this? Could be a good 3K.
Hopefully Wheating goes out relatively fast and tries to drag Rupp under 1:50. Rupp is def. capable of it, but it's a nice mental barrier to get under. Wheating's kick is unstoppable in the NCAA so he shouldn't have to worry about Rupp sitting on him. I'd actually like to see Wheating go out fairly fast and crack 1:47 himself after his minimal effort to 1:47.1 a few weeks ago.
Wheating easily. And to try to compare a strictly 800m/1500m guy to a 10,000m guy's time at 10,000 is just stupid. Wheating will easily win at 800 just like Rupp would easily win at 10,000.

I hope that Rupp get's in that race. I honestly think that in the right race Rupp could go down to 3:54 and, 3:57 if the wheels fall off the wagon on the last lap.
A race like PRE is just what he needs, stay off the back through 1000 try to get a little momemtum going coming into 1200 (which will probably be around 2:54-2:55 for him) and then just hang on for life.
Who knows, maybe he'll have a nice pop tomorrow in the 800.

What galen rupp have you guys been watching? It certainly can't be the rupp who has run 13:18 and 27:23 within the past six months, yet still can't break 4 minutes? a guy with that much endurance, still having trouble going under four, and you guys are predicting he will break 1:50? if he does, it will be a huge breakout race, and an indicator that he can go significantly faster in the mile than he has gone thus far. personally i think if he runs 1:52 that is pretty damn good for him. i don't predict much faster than 1:51.5 to 1:52.5, to be honest.
as for him running 3:54...what??? if the guy runs a 3:57 full mile outdoors, that will be a six something second improvement over his 1600 dmr leg from indoors (roughly, i'm not sure exactly what it was), from when he was in 13:18 shape. that would indicate something around 13 flat, which would be pretty damn good. on the other hand, unless his footspeed improves significantly to outdoors, a 3:54 equivalent for 5k for RUPP would be something insane that he is probably not capable of running, at least not right now.
and the comparisons between wheating and rupp are just silly. what would ever give you the impression that rupp could even compete with a 1:45 guy? the only distance they would be close to each other at is maybe 2000 meters, or 2400 meters, if it was ever run. anything shorter rupp gets blown away, anything farther wheating gets blown away.

I've been watching the Rupp that opened the indoor season a month or longer back with an 800 faster than you just predicted. He OPENED indoors with a 1:51.3. He came back shortly after to finish a mile in 1:55 for the 2nd half and kick down a 3:38 guy.

I think he split 3:58 for 1600 on the DMR, so he's right there at 4:00. He was also sick that race, went out alone in :57 and had the negative factor of a guy catching him and sitting on him. Nobody is saying Rupp can go 3:54 by himself, but I bet he could run 3:58 all alone right now on that track. If he got in a race like PRE and rides the train, 3 months from now he may be able to chopp off 3-4 more seconds.
Kennedy ran 3:55 winning PRE way back. But could BK go under 1:50? Rupp likely can, and PRE is a much faster race now.

maybe lananna has another cycle planned for rupp and thought running the 8 at pac 10's would be a good time to start that cycle over, and plan for a big 10k in late april(cardinal invite?). timing seems like it would be about right.
