Salazar was running for AW then

Rupp has the UO indoor record of 13:38
that race was live on network TV. Interesting
Record list here. http://www.trackandfieldnews.com/archive/records/indoor/collegiate.html

I'm looking forward to the 1st Rupp & Fernandez head to head.
821.4, not bad considering he almost pulled out because he had been sick.
Fernandez is a talent, he had a great miler opener and beat Derrick & Puskedra well in an out of season 8K cross race. Don't forget that Rupp beat them by over a minute on 10K at regionals when all them were keying up for nationals. And at NCAA's just 2 months ago Fernandez never was close to Rupp while Rupp just sat on Chelenga. Rupp wasn't running all out until the last 150 meters. Before that he was just stalking.
Now I know the shorter the distance, the shorter the gap, and Fernandez is improving rapidly, but people are making it sound like Fernandez has alreay beaten Rupp at 3K & 5K, while Rupp just owned a 7:32/13:00 ethiopian today.
I have no doubt they will have a battle at some point (perhaps very soon) but Rupp deserves his respect and is still THE collegiate runner to beat 3K and up.
UO says 13:38 for Rupp
T&FN says 13:22 for Al
I know Salazar ran the NCAAs that spring.
Hmmmm....

Was he out of indoor eligibility?
Al did not compete in the NCAA indoor meet.
He never really used his indoor eligibility, ie he never competed in indoor college meets.

Yes, it really is. I realize most know this, or could easily figure it out, but 7:45 = 31.0/200m pace for 15 200m laps. That's really outstanding.
This whole discussion has given me that much more respect for Kip Keino's 7:39.6. Yeah, it was run outdoors, but on a dirt track.
And 43 years ago. Getting easier for me to understand why it lasted (as a WR) as long as it did...
Rupp is starting to look like a salty Old Crow by now. Already done most in college that pros never acheive. The sky is the limit for hair boy Rupp.

When compared to Britains best 3km runner (only 25) it makes Rupp look average.
Mo Farah ran 7.40.
Rupp is good in America, but as usual Americans fail to look outside their borders.
'cept when we saved the limeys from Nazi Germany. too bad we couldn't teach the primitives in England to brush their teeth.
So what does a 7:35 make Mo look like?
While it is great that these forums exist for sharing information and opinions -- it is kind of a buzz kill to see the level of pointless debates including the occasional down talking of individual runners.
As someone who's been there, who ran shoulder to shoulder in the last golden era at Oregon - we runners always appreciated and admired and respected the excellence of our competitors.
Would we each have rather been the fastest in the world at our event, and won every race? To be like Pre and rarely lose? Yes!
But the day to day reality is, that very few runners get to be in the elite, in contention to win almost any race. Even certain sometime champions, often, rarely won titles.
It is called "competition" for a reason. And those that are faster than us, due to talent, or age, or superior training, always served to inspired us to take that run when we didn't really feel like it, to work a little harder when spent etc.
Track and Field, in the USA is less than a neglected sport to the general public. It just doesn't care. A casual Olympic fan, stumbling upon these forums, would be turned off by the sport as depicted in the oft immature and insulting comments found here.
Which is why I find it sad, when with a new era of talented good young men coming up, there is not more just plain Appreciation for --all of these athletes.
Listen, as a former Oregon runner, would I had rather that German Fernandez attended my alma mater? You bet!
Is it a great thing that we suddenly have a pool of potentially excellent young American runners with the potential to show, place, or win someday on the world stage!
Yes. And that is where all the focus should be, instead of this all too American, "us v. them" mentality that makes people in these forums trash one runner or another.
Track and Field is not football!
Having all these excellent runners, efforting to make the USA better in distance running, is nothing but an enjoyable diversion of sport, for which we should all display Nothing but "sportsmanship." A value that was once espoused in a culture of pure good sportsmanship.
Here is a call out as a tiny one stop voice on these forums, that how about some other voices of reason spread the word by example and holding others to task to "raise their game here."
Has anyone else seen the various quotes by German, Webb, Rupp and others that say that they No Longer Read these kinds of forums purely because of all the immature trashing of them and others that goes on?
Take a moment, especially those of you who have ever run competitively before... And think about all the long hours of running, mileage logged, intervals, circuits, sprints, weight lifting, exer-cycling, water work outs - and everything else you did to try and get better.
An immense amount of work goes into having a running career. And for alot of us, starting in high school, the work was often alone, especially if we were the elite athlete in our area...before joining a team in college.
Let's respect the work that all these athletes put in in order to pursue their dreams, excel at athletics, maybe represent our country -- and entertain us with their competition and sportsmanship in the process.
How about we all display equal sportsmanship to the athletes we enjoy watching?
And pass the word, please.

i agree, a 3k matchup between rupp and fernandez would be pretty damn exciting, but i think everyone knows that fernandez has rupp's number. sorry, fernandez has the stamina and the speed.
WHAT??! what are you smoking? how does fernandez have rupp's number? so what if he ran a fast mile, the 3k is almost twice that far. Rupp just ran 7:44 and beat out Geneti. I'm sorry, but until Fernandez beats Rupp, Rupp is the guy to beat.
Forever Duck,
I echo your sentiments exactly. Well said. While I do have my favorites as a fan, it is extremely exciting to see all of these runners racing at high levels.
Rupp is as fast as Willis was when he ran the 3K at Michigan.
I think Rupp should move down to the mile. I believe he could run 3:52-3:54 at Pre this year (just follow Willis at even pace 58..58..58..58 => 3:52.
Ruppy, Duppy, Do! Greatest of all time!!!!

24. 12:24.7 (29.8)
25. 12:53.9 (29.2)
Nice post, ForeverDuck. I think it's natural for everyone to have favorites that they root for ahead of others, but it's unfortunate that some people need to trash everybody but their top favorite. I root for Galen Rupp, and I also root for German Fernandez unless it's head-to-head against Rupp.
When German has a good race, I enjoy seeing it or reading about it because I'm a fan of track and XC and I enjoy good performances. I don't think "Oh crap, since I root first of all for Galen, a good run by German makes Galen look worse."
This "us versus them" extremism seems a bit much.
