There's the article by runners world. Though I appreciate the article being written, he really goes after the fact that Reich and Grinnell probably won't be scoring well. Eesh.

Henry Reich is a champ and some of you dolts are absolute chumps. End of story.

He has track bests of 2:07, 4:28 (1600), and 9:58 (3200).

He was top finisher for Grinell in 8km cross country regionals in 26:00 and small change.

Running is just one of his activities. He is a well rounded individual with eclectic interests.

The Rhodes Scholarship was an opportunity, but he had his reasons, and will still do well.

You number jockeys just don't get it. Why does it matter how fast he is?

This was probably not an easy decision, but if you knew anything about him or his team, you would realize it is easier than you think.

How is it possible that someone with times like that can be the top runner for a team going to D-3 nationals?! Are they really that weak?

how is it possible that someone with a 2:07 PR can run a 25:16? obviously those PRs are out of date.

And there is NO JV highschool team in the country (not even york) that could field sub-26 8k runners.

My son was a Grinnell runner, and there is nothing unusual here in what Henry is doing. Life is choice; he made one, and that's that. There is little question that despite this particular choice, he'll do well once he leaves Grinnell, and will undoubtedly have numerous options with regard to his future studies. With degrees in math and physics, it is likely that doctoral studies are in his future. I cannot see why it matters what his top times are, what it means to run Division 3, or any other idiocy most of you are stating. Grinnell is tough, the runners have killer class schedules, and yet they still do well enough to make it to Nationals. Will Freeman is a class act.

And no, not even York could field sub-26 8k runners, though at one time they did with Sage and Bakken... BTW, Dave Montgomery, the #2 runner for Grinnell, is a former York runner.

not true

His 8K PR was 25:06 at UW Oshkosh this year (see the top 50 list), which is pretty respectable. A runner like Reich could make the top 5 or 6 of almost all D1 teams, except maybe the the top tier at NCAAs.

When I attended that institution decades ago, it was more or less every man for himself both on an off the course. Reich will have other wonderful opportunities for post graduate education, including possibly another Rhodes interview next year, if indeed the earlier posting was correct. Kudos to a good effort.

I since this years track season hasn't occurred yet I looked at 2007's national cross country results and then looked to see how they did in the indoor/outdoor track season that followed. Also I only looked at schools where I could readily find compiled results so I'm sure the following list is even longer....

Emory 32nd...4 under 15:30

Rhodes 30th...1 under 15:30

Trinity 29th...3 under 15:30

TCNJ 28th...3 under 15:30

Heildelbeg 27th...2 under 15:30, none near 15:00

Carleton 23rd... 3 under 15:30

ONU 17th...Ohio Northern from their online record books has only had a handful of guys go under 15:30 in their entire history

St.Johns 13th...3 runners under 15:30

UW-Platteville 11th...4 runners under 15:30 (I'm giving you the runner at 15:30.xx)

CMU 9th...3 under 15:30

Clearly you may want to rethink that statement.

2007 cross season would correspond to the 2008 indoor/outdoor track season. How about showing 5 runners from Emory that run under 15:30 in 2008.

Proof is in the previous post by me. There were numerous teams that ran at nationals who then did not have 5 runners in the track season that followed break 15:30.

Just face the facts. I'm not insulting anyone it's just how things are.

Actually, ha, you're probably more wrong than right. d3 is different from d1 in one important respect. In d3, cross is more important than track. The athletes aren't paid to run, and a lot of them emphasize cross over track. Some very good d3 runners either do not run track, or they skip track seasons (study abroad) or they just don't put a lot of effort into track. So it isn't terribly helpful to look at track times for d3 guys.

This whole conversation started because several people put up fairly ridiculous posts about Henry Reich, not to mention the baby nationals threads. Ghost posted what must have been high school times for Reich, implying that even the top d3 runners are slower than most decent hs kids. The truth is that Reich came through 5k yesterday in 15:40. I'm pretty sure he can go sub 15:30, even though you may not be able to find a sub 15:30 track time for him (I haven't looked).

I run for an average d3 team in an average d3 region. I've run this year against almost half of the national teams. My 5k track pr is 15:24, but I would have run 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th for most of those teams, just looking at who beat me over the course of the year.

Our team ran a 5k time trial on the track one week before regionals. Top 5 went 15:26, 15:36 (me), 15:57, 16:11 and 16:26. We did not come close to making it out of our region, and, even though I ran well at regionals, I did not make it as an individual qualifier. My best guess (looking at comparative times against guys I have run against this year) is that I would have finished well in the bottom half of the field at nationals.
