Rupp's workout reminded me of the thread about Geb's recent WR--could you run one 400 at his marathon pace for 104 days in a row? could you run 1 mile at his pace for 26 days in a row...
WR 5000m is 25 x 200m in about 30.33
So Rupp ran 4800m at 5000m WR pace with tempo-ish pace 200s in between.
I'm very impressed. I hope it translates for him. It'd be a shame for all this fitness not to add up to some fast wins in big races.
I don't know if Rupp will run good at NCAA cross there might be some rutts on the course! Oh yeah and a super fast Kenyan.
Maybe Salazar and Nike should petition the NCAA for a separate less "treacherous" course for Rupp. This should sit well with the letsrunners who cling to the belief that Rupp should be given every advantage. Anyone who doesn't agree could simply be written off as bitter or jealous.

I once watched TWill run 13:38 for 5k doing in and outs. I believe he did it in preperation for World Cross. One hell of a workout to watch. I think he was running 70-60's and kept going the last 200m to finish out the 5,000m.
the real question for this thread is
how many laps of 30-40 could Kenenisa Bekele do? El Guerrouj in his prime?
If Rupp could go 24 laps of 30-40, I bet K. Bekele could go at least 30-32. Maybe as much as 36. The dude's a freak of nature.

Tremendous workout.
But another reminder of how stellar BK was: He ran 25 consecutive 31 second 200M's for his 5K record. Not a diss at all against Rupp. But every year for 12 years, "another runner will break BK's record". Totally disrespectful to BK.

I am amazed that a simple workout generates so much controversy and garbage form you guys, but I guess Rupp is a polarizing runner.
I am also amazed that Salazar (who is not a college coach) is talking to a newspaper (that is not the college newspaper) about just Galen skipping a meet in favor of this workout. He must still really need to attention.
I would have kept this under my hat until AFTER the NCAA's, or maybe forever.
The reason I am posting is something that I realized right away, but thought it would have been posted by now: Rupp didn't break Pre's record because Pre ran 5 MILES of 40/30 on a 440y track. If my math is right the difference at 28:00 for 24 (400m) laps is 1.65s per 1600m (compared to 1760y).
So Rupp had an 8 second advantage going through the 8000m mark.

I don't really see what all the hype is about this work out, yes it is very good, but when you think about it, its nothing special for a 27.30 10k runner (think Rupp's pr is 27.33).
He ran 6 miles, so a lap short of 10k at 29.10 pace, I know the alternation in pace is what makes it really tough, but he is over a min and a half outside his 10k race pace.
For a 30 min guy to do the equivalent to this work out (in terms of effort) he would need to hit about 31.40 pace, So average 76 per lap), break this down into 200's with a 10 sec differential and you are talking about alternating 33, 43 for each 200 with I think a lot of 30 min guys would be able to handle.
In conclusion, it is a very good work out, but all 27.30 10k runners should be able to handle it
