With the winter months soon approaching, has anyone ever tried training in the ice and snow with grip type thin rubber coverings with spikes available through outdoor catalogs that stretch over the shoe or sneaker?

Never tried them, but sometimes I did wish I had them. I was tempted to run in spikes during some really icy winter runs, but that would be ridiculous. It never hurts to try, but running with regular rubber on ice might make it hurt to not try.
yeah, i have those rubber things that strap over your shoes, with carbon-fiber spikes in them. They work really well, actually.
i know some might be concerned with the weight of them, but one usually doesn't run too fast in the winter anyway, it's usually base-building time. plus, i would rather run encumbered than run with a high chance of slipping and breaking a leg.
in sum--i recommend them highly if you live in an area that sees a lot of ice.
I remember seeing on Matt Carpenter's (renowned mountain/high altitude runner) website some instructions for putting screws in the bottom of your running shoes...if you could get it to work (and have a pair of shoes to sacrifice) it would be a lot lighter than the strap on things.

Move South dude, that stuff is ridiculous to deal with all winter long. Hey, maybe we could train together downn here in the Winter and we can go up to your place in the summer to get away from our hot summers.
