Lengthy post...so bear with me. I was a fairly succesful runner in the 1970's and early 80's. After finishing my collegiate career I stopped running competitively and did what most of us do...went to work. I rarely ran, and when I did it would be for 3-4 months at a time. Anyway, I started running on a treadmill in April 07 and have continued 4 days a week until now. The intensity was not much as my weight was restrictive. I am running 25 miles a week and recently started doing some "surges" in the middle of a 30 minute run. Today I stepped on a track and did some 100 meter accelerations just to fill the "need for speed". Felt strong so I thought I would run a couple 400's. This is an indoor track (5 1/4 laps/mile )so there were 5 squared off turns for each 400. I ran the first in 70.2, walked 200 meters and ran the second in 68.8. Felt fluid and strong and by no means ran 100%. So here is the question. If someone stays healthy, trains smart and makes a serious attempt....can they run 2:00 for 800 when they near 50 years old? I am 48 right now. I need to know if I am crazy or not. My PR was 1:52 in 1981.
