anti-gravity treadmills? altitude tents? c'mon
come on what?
what is the big deal? if he wants to be the best that he can be, why would he refuse to train with the highest tech equipment?
why don't you stop wearing shoes and stop eating food from the grocery store and stop using a watch. and stop considering things like lactate threshold and vo2max. that's witchcraft.
i don't think it's a big deal. it just seems like he's going way out of his way and not getting as much in return. he would be great with or without

the funny thing is all the anti-gravitation,legal supplements, altitude tents..etc.. in the world will not allow him to compete with some cattle farmer that runs on red dirt...After all this isnt swimming, or biking now is it?
i suck compared to all of them, but i still enjoy running.
and noone needs this crap.
While I agree Galen's image would be helped by losing the high-tech fairy stuff, Letsrun needs to lose the delusion that all the top East Africans are poor village people. Sorry, but Bekele, Sileshi, Tadesse, et al. are just as professional in their training and in the resources available to them as Galen Rupp.
'well sehalsgu' is whats wrong with with American distance running. We get caught up in all the high tech shit, perfect diet, perfect situations, etc.
Back in my prime I trained with a group of Kenyan marathoners. The group's ability ranged from 2:08 - 2:13 PR's.
They were the most basic people. There main concern was getting in 140-150 miles per week and what was on TV in the afternoon.
Galen Rupp signifies what is wrong with America, we worry about all this extra fancy gizmo type shit that will give us the edge.
We lose sight of the basics, which is what other countries have perfected. Hard training. High mileage training. For years in NON perfect situations.
There are a few things that really changed my life training with those guys.
They had a saying "To suffer in the race, you have to suffer in life".
The best in the world DO NOT use all this high tech shit. The 2:08 guy in the group didn't know how to work a f***ing computer, and would have laughed at altitude tents. Fun fact was, he got his first pair of shoes at age 19 and never went to a grocery store until he came to America for a marathon.

No, I stopped using it as well, so now no one needs this crap.

would you like a medal or chest to pin it on.
Rupp is a very good example of of why american distance running(western running in general)will NEVER compete again.
it has become a yuppie sport in these countries, and sorry but they DONT have the grit they once did.
if such a thing were to happen in say wrestling(another gritty sport)...im sure we would suck as bad in that as well.

So, what you're saying is that many people in the distance running world see Rupp as an embodiment of where we think we've gone wrong as a culture? So we take out that frustration on Rupp as a whipping boy?
I think that's a pretty fair assessment. Same thing goes for the tech-focused "Runners World" sort.
So is this more of a "cultural battle" thing of American Work Ethic versus looking for easy solutions?
Or perhaps more of a luddite imperative?
Or is it purely a case of projection?
I forgot to add that the fact that Rupp looks like Tinkerbell doesn't help him much, either.
I have no problem with him using that stuff to train. Obviously, it's out there for a reason.
I do have a problem with Alberto the great tries to mislead people and says his only advantages is a grass field. Come'on, at least be honest.
Alberto...?...be honest?...haha

Typical "back in my day" sentiment...
Always good for a laugh.
Yuppie Olympic Distace Coach: Alerto Salazar
Blue Collar Olympic Coach: Joe Vigil, Terrance Mahon
Some of the attitude/toys mentioned above is why Dr. Vigil refused to coach in Boulder: He didn't want his athletes to get too comfortable.

no its NOT a back in my day assment(born in 83)... itis a matter of fact in the PRESENT..
The simple fact is of the men who will win a gold medal in a distance event this summer...probably none will use anti-gravitation, most will have been born into poverty...and all will have trained harder than rupp.

Marius Bakken (13,06 PB and former letsrun poster) has trained with just about all world class track runners and he said there was no difference in training between African and European/American athletes.
You don´t have a clue exactly how hard Rupp trains, so you can take your "facts" and shove them!
marius is an expert now?..who did he exactly train with?....is he even american?
......lets say kenyans have overcome more odds...i am sure rupp farmed and ran to school barefoot until he was "discovered" at 18 then moved to the big city where they had 8-10 runners living in modest house of coach/agent and ran 3 times a day for 10 months a year then headed back to the farm in the offseason to take care of the farm......
