Don't run for the materialistic/financial gain as this is the true way to failure. Get your priorities right
Train hard, work hard, live correctly and race smart. If you do this, then you will run quickly and the money men will find you when you produce the goods.
thanks for the idealistic advice, and i agree, but bascially i run in college and can either: a, take a job out of college that pays $60,000 a year, or try get better and run. So while i would not "run for money" i have to eat and was just curious as to how fast i would have to run to make running finacially and option???
The jobs will be there. take a year and train to see what you have in the tank.
You'd be surprised how little money you can get by on for a year or two while you chase your dream. You'd also be surprised how motivating that level of poverty is.
Give yourself a year. Find a part-time job, move in with some roommates and eliminate every expense not related to basic survival...and run. Lots of guys have done it and made unbelievable progress. Re-evaluate at the end of the year if your progress justifies doing it another year; maybe your progress in that year will bring you enough money that it will be easier.
You want to find out what Nike pays for a 1:45? Then run 1:45 and you'll know.
i think what these guys are trying to say is they have no idea. i don't either, and don't know where to look, but GO FOR IT!!! I say good luck.
for a 145, maybe 15, maybe less. depends on what you do in college, if you're a ncaa champ/ top two, maybe on the higher side of 15, if not, and you run slower than 146, good luck even thinking about more than 10. there's not a lot out there for the 800 guys unless you're competitive on the national/world level, sorry. best of luck kid.
There are 1:46 guys in the US right now that do not even get shoes. I know KD Robinson did not get jack from a shoe company until he broke 1:45. He was supported by SMTC prior to that. Do not count on $$$. I was ranked #3 in my event one year and did not sniff the kind of money you are asking about. Good luck though.
I'm more curious to know what job you can get "right out of college" that will pay you US$60K per year. :)
I've know I was in the wrong profession for quite some time, but ...

How old are you? Because it can take a lot more than just a year to improve. Some runners don't really mature until their late 20s or early 30s. You might be a decent 800 guy, but have you tried moving up? What can you do a 10k in? 5k? Steeple? 1500m?
Hey Martin:
First year pharmacy grads are getting $80,000. Most pharmacy programs are 6 yr (that I know of), but it's a pretty good pay off.

That's true but you should at least see some progress to let you guage whether its worthwhile to continue a life of poverty. If you live nothing but the sport for 12 solid months and only cut .1 from your 800 PR, you might want to reconsider. The biggest indicator of talent is the improvement RATE and if you have four or five years of collegiate running under your belt, and throw yourself totally into the sport for a year with no distractions on top of that, you should see SOME improvement if you have any talent at all. I am assuming, of course, that you're in the right event, doing the right training, living the right lifestyle, etc.
That's impressive dosh!
Obviously, pushing pills is a lot more lucrative than pushing nouns and verbs together for the uncultured audiences that read the Dow Jones Newsire.
Alas -- each has his calling, I suppose.

Romeo (Act V, Secne 1)
...I do remember an apothecary,--
And hereabouts he dwells,--which late I noted
In tatter'd weeds, with overwhelming brows, 40
Culling of simples; meagre were his looks,
Sharp misery had worn him to the bones:
And in his needy shop a tortoise hung,
An alligator stuff'd, and other skins
Of ill-shaped fishes; and about his shelves 45
A beggarly account of empty boxes,
Green earthen pots, bladders and musty seeds,
Remnants of packthread and old cakes of roses,
Were thinly scatter'd, to make up a show.
Noting this penury, to myself I said 50
'An if a man did need a poison now,
Whose sale is present death in Mantua,
Here lives a caitiff wretch would sell it him.'
O, this same thought did but forerun my need;
And this same needy man must sell it me. 55
As I remember, this should be the house.
Being holiday, the beggar's shop is shut.
What, ho! apothecary!
I get it....
Romeo=Regina
Apothecary=Conte
beggar's shop=BALCO
Shakespeare's remains relevant even to these modern times...
what's your basic speed, quarter time? if you're not in the 46s you won't be fast enough to do anything in the 800m. If you're in the 47s I'd look at the 1500m. Beyond that, I'd look at the 5k and 10k, however scary that may seem.
I agree with atruemiler, mabey you should move up in distance. The 1500 might be prefect for you do a soild year of cross running and then with some leg speed you should be able to runa soild mile
Question... how do you decide "basic" leg speed? What if you run 49 in the 400 but run 22.5 in the 200 that would suggest you could run 48 or low 47 so what would you say your event would be.
Forget the Nike contract. You are 1 second per 200 away from world class. Maybe 500 other people on the planet can say that. 50 million can say they make $60,000 a year or more.
Gotta make yourself marketable. Might be hard, but this is your only hope. Or, you could run real fast. The faster the better. You would be more pleased with yourself and sponsors would be willing to give a little more. Good luck.
If you rode a dragon around the track I bet you could get some money.
