Minnesota Section 3AA meet.
Finnerty 4:06.x
Carlson 4:07.x
Nice conditions, even pacing, great race to the wire.
Both break Minnesota all time HS record.

Interesting. Given the prior talent that's come out of Minnesota (Beardsley, Kempenian, etc) I'm surprised.
Props to Finnerty and Carlson.

Maybe the all time "1600" record, but I clearly remember a guy named Bjorklund who ran 4:05 long, long ago for a full mile.

Beardsley couldn't run a 4:10 mile if his life depended on it.
Is that Andrew Carlson's little brother? Where are these guys going to school next year?
Nick Schneider with a national title out of MN never ran faster than 4:08 I believe.
Not related to Andrew Carlson, and Finnerty's going to Madison, Carlson to Notre Dame.
Finnerty - Wisconsin
Carlson - Notre Dame

1600 meter run
Nick Schneider, Benidle-St. Margarets
4:08.57 2001*
(* Gary Bjorklund’s mile time of 4:05.10 ranks faster when converting yards to meters. Starting in 2003, the Minnesota State High School League opted to make Schneider’s 1600 time the official record.)

I find this incredible. Bjorklund's mark converts to 4:03.3 for 1600, so he passed the 1600 mark over 5 seconds faster than did Schneider. And now he's relegated to a footnote. Shame on the Minnesota State High School League.

agreed, that's embarrassing.

While I regrettably forgot Bjorklund from the list, there's no doubt that Beardsley grew into a national class talent. He may not have been fast in high school, or even ever had the foot speed for a good mile. He was certainly on the list of people that should have been considered when thinking about potential record setters.
Interesting, I think Carlson has defeated Finnerty once or maybe twice this season at 1600m. Also Rob was beaten by someone else at 1600m, which has lead to all kinds of speculation that he was hurt or certainly no longer invincible and should stick with the 3200m. Now this great 1600m by both; has
to be a great confidence-builder for Finnerty. I agree that BJ's mile conversion should be the real 1600 record, and that was run almost 40 years ago!
1600 METER RUN
======================= All-time Boys' Best 4:03.7 Garry Bjorklund 1969
At least raceberryjam.com has it correct.
For the record, BJs time should be 4:05.1 since it was hand timed. Beardsley never broke 16 minutes for XC 3 mile races in high school. And when did Burnsville move to 3AA?? I had to run against those bastards when they were really, really good in 1AA.
I remember one year at the 1AA regional the mile (not the bastard 1600) was something like:
1. Redenbough (Rochester JM) 4:11
2. Keith (Rochester Mayo) 4:11.7
3. Carney (Burnsville) 4:12.5 (as a soph)
4. O'Donnell (Simley) 4:13 (two time defending state champ finishes 4th in the region with a PR)
Good times.

I can't imagine why on Earth you would think that? If Beardsley could break 4:10 in the mile at any point in his career I'd be shocked.

You are correct in that Beards could not run 4:10 for the mile. He was only a 4:30-40ish miler at Wayzata High School, but developed later post-college when he started running mega-mileage. Dick maybe could not run a mile in 4:10, but he could string together a lot of 4:50-4:55s for a 2:08:5X Marathon.....we all have different talents!! He has very similar talent as Bill Rodgers, who likewise would struggle to run a 4:10 mile, but ran a pretty fair marathon or two...... OSS

They recently re-figured some of the sections in Minnesota. E.g. Section 6AA was unbelievably strong in CC, so some of the teams were moved around to make things a little more fair, and make more sense geographically. It was almost impossible for a very good CC kid to make it to State out of the old Section6AA. Burnsville went to 3AA, so Finnerty at least was gone.
There were some great mile/2 mile times run in Minnesota in the time frame you mention; I didn't realize that Rob Carney ran THAT fast as a SOPHOMORE...impressive!! (He was our Nike rep at my running store for many years)
The new list of the top 5 MN 1600 times go as followed

Thanks for the update; this makes a lot more sense. It's amazing that the MSHSL doesn't recognize Bjorklund's
MILE from 1969. Also, Finnerty ran a great 3200m...9:00. Wisconsin is getting a great talent!!
