Has there ever been a decent mid to long distance runner who has gotten his mileage mostly through intervals?

Bruce Tulloh, when he was in his prime in the late fifties/early sixties did interval training 4 days per week monday to thursday, rest friday, race almost every saturday, yes 50 races per year and 10-12 miles on sunday.
He ran a 3.57 mile, this was in the days before synthetic tracks, so it would be worth low 3.50's
In 1969 he ran across America averageing 44 miles per day which was more than he ran in a week ten years before, when he was averaging 30-40 miles per week.
The sessions he did from monday to thursday were awesome, I can't find a google reference, but hopefully somone can post some more information.
