Samuel Barber, Addagio for strings
Samuel Barber, Addagio for strings
Anything in Dm. It's the saddest of all keys. I don't know why, but it makes people weep instantly if you play it.
eagles - sad cafe
Telemann's Concerto in D for Trumpet is another good one.

There is a Telemann piece Concerto for Flute and Oboe I believe, I heard years ago. I've lost the exact title..not sad exactly but the oboe voice positivly weeps at points.
The poster that mentioned TAPS might be the thread ender.
Day is done,gone the sun
From the hills,from the lake
From the sky.
All is well, safely rest,
God is nigh.
Fades the light; And afar
Goeth day, And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well; Day has gone,
Night is on.
Thanks and praise, For our days,
'Neath the sun, Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go, This we know,
God is nigh.
Saddest is superlative. What's with the most? C'mon, know your English language.
"Everybody Hurts" by R.E.M. I don't even know if that's the name of the song or just the main verse.
Actually it's the sappiest song I've ever heard, and R.E.M. sucks soggy asses.

In a little while from now,
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower,
And climbing to the top,
Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Ever what it's like when your shattered
Left standing in the lurch, at a church
Where people saying,
"My God that's tough, she stood him up!
No point in us remaining.
We may as well go home."
As I did on my own,
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay,
Looking forward to, but who wouldn't do,
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt,
Talk about God and His mercy
For if He really does exist
Why did He desert me
In my hour of need?
I truly am indeed,
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts
Broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do? What do we do?
(instrumental break)
Alone again, naturally
Now looking back over the years,
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old,
My mother, God rest her soul,
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
So badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally
He Went To Paris - Jimmy Buffett

By: jimmy buffett
1973
He went to paris lookin’ for answers
To questions that bothered him so
He was impressive, young and aggressive
Savin’ the world on his own
But the warm summer breezes
The french wines and cheeses
Put his ambition at bay
The summers and winters
Scattered like splinters
And four or five years slipped away
Then he went to england, played the piano
And married an actress named kim
They had a fine life, she was a good wife
And bore him a young son named jim
And all of the answers and all of the questions
Locked in his attic one day
’cause he liked the quiet clean country livin’
And twenty more years slipped away
Well the war took his baby, the bombs killed his lady
And left him with only one eye
His body was battered, his whole world was shattered
And all he could do was just cry
While the tears were a-fallin’ he was recallin’
Answers he never found
So he hopped on a freighter, skidded the ocean
And left england without a sound
Now he lives in the islands, fishes the pilin’s
And drinks his green label each day
Writing his memoirs, losin’ his hearin’
But he don’t care what most people say
Through eighty-six years of perpetual motion
If he likes you he’ll smile and he’ll say
Jimmy, some of it’s magic, some of it’s tragic
But I had a good life all the way
Coda:
And he went to paris lookin’ for answers
To questions that bothered him so

Yes. This is the first one that popped into my mind. Other songs may be sad, but there is something really depressing about the realistic factor, and the fact that they were never really close, that their relationship was a lifelong thing wasted in a way. Ugh. Amazing song though.
Dry Your Eyes by The Streets
Nothing by me, that's for sure.
But here are a few:
'Best Ever Death Metal Band out of Denton' Mountain Goats
'West Palm Beach' Palace Music
'Horses' Sally Timms (Mekons) original, Palace Music version
'I See a Darkness' Bonnie 'Prince' Billy (Johnny Cash cover especially)
'Innocent When you Dream' Tom Waits
'Racing in the Street' Springsteen
'Dry Lightning' Springsteen
'Something in the Night' Springsteen
'Darkness on the Edge of Town' Springsteen
'Desperados Waiting for a Train (lots of versions)
'Here Comes a Regular' Replacements
'Dallas' Silver Jews
'Pancho and Lefty' Townes van Zandt (not the Willie Nelson version)
'Coalminer' Uncle Tupelo
'Whiskey Bottle' Uncle Tupelo
Many Velvet Underground songs
'Via Chicago' Wilco
'I am Trying to Break Your Heart' Wilco
Agree with Cats in the Cradle by Harry Chapin.
Something is so depressing about the realism of the song, and the fact that the son and dad were never close, and that their relationship was shallow and almost wasted in a way. Ugh. Amazing song though.
