Are there any runners in the house, who routinely take their little tot with them in a jogging stroller?
I am looking at buying a jogging stroller and the advice I am getting from people (non-runners and non-gearheads) seem to be pretty useless. I read reviews for different models online, but for the most part they seem to be written by people who have never ran a mile in their life.
I do not want to drop huge money on a stroller, but I would like to have something that is not only safe for my child but also does not feel like I am pushing an old shopping cart.
Mostly I will just be doing short runs with the little guy on paved bike paths. But I would also love to enter the occasional 5k with the stroller in tow.
1. Is weight really that important? I am trying to steer away from the models with built in sound systems, cup holders, blinkers, ect. But with a growing baby, diapers, snacks and such, does being a weight weenie over 5 additional pounds really matter?
2. What about the front wheels? The options out there are fixed front wheels, swiveling front wheels, and lockable front wheels.
Right now I am looking at the lockable swiveling wheels because I figure that would be best for getting around tight corners when shopping.
3. What about handbrakes? The sales guy at Babys R Us laughed at me last night when I asked about it. He said "Just how fast do you think you are going to be running?" I noticed that all of the higher end joggers have the handbrakes. I suspect it is not so much a safety issue for the little guy inside, but more of a issue of wasted energy in the local 5k run because the parent is constantly pulling back when running down hills. But I do not know since I never used one. Are these necessary or not?
I am not planning on medaling in the local marathon, but if it is a pain in the rump to operate, I will not be as likely to use it.
Any advice or recommendations?
