Burning kids out is one reason many thought the individual national championship was enough.
And yes XC for a lot of people is about the team. But on the high school level I think the state championship is enough.
There could easily be a national championship tournament for say the top 16 basketball teams in the country but I don't think you're going to see it happen. Most people think that high school athletes shouldn't be treated like pro or college athletes.
Plus with the way XC scoring is done I think at the high school level a team national champion really is dependent on who is in the race and how the scoring is done . The top individuals will be crushing most of the guys in the team competition. Maybe you won't count them in the team scoring but the whole concept of "this team is the national champ" just doesn't resonate as well or mean as much at least to me. Run the race again the next day and I bet for the boys you'll see a lot different winners because the teams are pretty similar.
I know Nike monitors message boards but just because there are posts supportive of the NTN idea doesn't mean they're all from Beaverton. It just means people aren't keeping the thread on its original course.
Sure this happens in others sports but not as much.
