So, I want to start lifting weights as a complement to my running, but I really have no idea how to go about it. I've never embarked on a serious program of weightlifting.
I'm pretty much just a distance guy-- I've run 15:40 for 5k cross-country, 9:30 in the two-mile...but my 400 speed is about 57.xx. I'm running lots of miles this season, 70-80 a week, and I feel really fit at the longer distances, but my basic short-run sprinting/kicking speed is crap. I do core exercises regularly (crunches, situps, planks), but not much besides occasional pushups for my arms. I feel like better upper body strength would help my running as a whole and my speed in particular.
So the question is, what should I do? I want to gain strength in my arms + upper body, but NOT excess muscle mass (I'm a little on the heavy side for a distance runner, though it's mostly in the legs). Curls? Bench presses? Other sorts of lifting? I really could use some advice. Thanks in advance.
