I am a college senior about to graduate from a smaller D2 school. I ran in high school, maybe about 25 miles per week for 2 years and had a mile PR of 446 ( I realize it is slow). I enjoyed running and so I walked on to the team. I trained semi-hard freshmen year with poor results and then really upped the effort sophomore year (about 50-55 miles per week) and ended up running a 1539 for 5k half way through track before getting mono and ending my season. Junior year I didnt race too much in the fall but focused on the 1500 in the spring and ran 412. After training all summer (60mpw) and running well in cross in the fall, I have had a pretty good track season, running 358 with two meets to go.
I am trying to decide what I want to do running wise after school. I think about training hard for four years and trying to cut of 18 seconds over four years, maybe going for the Olympic trials standard or a sub-4. Yet, I do realize thats a huge chunk of time and may not be feasible no matter how hard I train.
So here is my question: is it possible to know if I have the talent/ability to go sub 4 in the mile...how would you get an idea of what your potential is?
Any thoughts on developmental potential would be great, they really don't have to be directed at my situation just some ideas on the subject.
