Situation: Two girl runners severely underachieving on the track.
Runner A: She has all the talent in the world so much so that other coaches in the area have asked me if I have contacted colleges for her. Her stride is perfect. She's is a very tall, thin runner with a very efficient stride. When she races, she refuses to lose. As a freshman state champion, she has not been able to regain her form. She had zero structure in her training when she won states. Now, her training is structured but she always finds ways to get out of it, (stayed after school for a project, skips Sat. practices, walks on easy runs, etc) She doesn't want to train Mon-Fri and wonders why she can't even break 5:30 on Sat invites. How do I get this athlete motivated?
Runner B: This girl is what every coach wants. Another very tall, slim runner, this girl is tied for first in her school class because she is overly competitive in everything ranging from basketball, school, field hockey, etc. This unfortunately does not include track. She wants badly to be faster and she does everything that I ask of her. When it comes time to race, she has no competitive drive what so ever and lets runners pass her without a fight. She has not raced fast ever since placing third her freshman year at states. Now, she struggles to run sub 5:40 in the mile, even though she is undoubtedly in sub 5:15 shape. The other day, she ran a mile of striders in 5:39 striding the straights and jogging the turns. Unfortunately, in our meet the other day, she split 2:56 in the 4x8 and didn't even break 13 min in the two mile. I've never seen anybody with so much drive to succeed have such a horrible lack of ???? something.
I need to motivate RUNNER A to train and I need to get into the head of RUNNER B and figure out why she can not come anywhere near where her fitness level suggest she should be.
Runner A averages most likely 25-30 miles per week on a good week.
Runner B averages 35-40 miles per week on an average week.
HELP PLEASE. I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING.
