Really, if there were ipods in the 70's, runners would have run with them, then real runners would wear ipods.

Wow... now I want one too! I also got a really killer core workout from kneeling down and praying the other day too.

Did I see a Garmin Forerunner on his arm?
Yes, he mentions in the video that he uses it.
I've run sub 14;30 for 5k
sure thats nothing amazing but I think its enough to call myself a runner
I run with a I-pod every now and then.
Sometimes you just need the extra motivation.
Get over yourself.
I rarely run with an iPod, in part because I run on a long straight country road and I like to run in the middle and need to hear what's coming up behind me. But occasionally I've taken it out on a 2 hour run, and it's a nice change of pace. No need to make it an either/or proposition. Generally I run to clear my head, to focus--like a meditator--on the matter at hand. And music gets in the way of that. But once I was assembling a double CD for label release, and I needed to listen to the whole thing and was having a hard time finding the time. The long run was the perfect place to do this.
I bought the iPod, actually, when I'd been forced to take off two months and knew my comeback pace was going to be slow. I was afraid I'd get bored at a slow jog. The iPod let me just put in the time. That's the best way of using the iPod, I think.
As for people who use the iPod to psyche themselves up: I've found that 5 minutes of music just before I go running puts a groove in my head that lasts me most of the way.
In general, though, I feel sorry for people who get so attached to the psyche-up they receive from their iPod that they complain bitterly when races ban the things. That's just sad. Folks: grow up. Real runners don't NEED iPods. They use them, but they also know that the hunger to run, and run hard, comes from inside, a place deeper than any mp3 fix.
A few thoughts...
* Is there any reason why Hall runs with the traffic flow rather than against it? Stay safe up there! Headphones + running with your back to oncoming vehicles ain't too safe.
* I thought he and Sara lived in a trailer. Looks like they got new digs. Congrats.
* That's some beautiful country up there.
* Josh Cox's comments on the video are great: "I can't believe we got beat by Larry the Cucumber for most viewed on Wednesday!"
* Nice puppy.
* Godtube has some better running videos on it than flocasts.
Where is the ipod? I don't ever see it in the video. Could someone tell me the time in the video (ex 5:30) where it is visible?

This is the best explanation I've heard to date.
Kudos.
POD!!!!
It's visible in a good portion of the video. Begining at 6:28 and then periodically throughout the rest of the video's running shots, for example @ 6:28, 9:35, and 10:44.
The headphones are clearly seen during the sequence from 10:56-11:02.
They are white and appear to be Apple I-Pod earbuds, but the footage is too grainy. They could be Walgreens-variety knockoffs. "Craigs" or something similar.
He likes to run. He likes music. Why not both at the same time?
I like tits. I like whipped cream. Why not both at the same time?
How many times will people proclaim it "makes you faster"?? You may Feel faster listening to rocky, or the time will pass quicker, but you are not Moving faster.
How can you be so sure, hotshot?
WHO FLIPPIN CARES??????????
Is anyone who does not want to run with an iPod forced to? Is anyone who WANTS to run with an iPod forced not to (other than USATF sanctioned races)?
Personally, I train with an iPod, but would never race with one. Just my personal preferance, and I would never force my practices on others.
Do you also want to know/critique/ridicule his other habits? What he eats? How long he brushes his teeth? Boxers of Breifs? Does he put his pants on right leg first, or left? Does he put his running clothes in the dryer, or hang dry them?
You are criticizing this guy over things that don't matter, and you know, given the fact that he is faster than, uh, ALL of us, give it a rest.
I'm 45 and have been running since I was 14.... I just started to use a shuffle this year. It is a nice change and provides needed motivation at 5am in the middle of winter.
Why do so many people care what someone else does? I could care less what someone else does for their training/racing/free time or whatever, especially when it doesn't affect me or anyone else.
I have been annoyed when running after sunset and passing someone with headphones on results in them screaming because they didn't hear me, but that's a pretty specific situation. So unless Ryan Hall somehow interfered with your life because he was unaware of you being there because of his ipod- why do you give a shit?
sunglasses...
where are all the sunglass haters now?

He runs with traffic because Sarah follows him in the car. It is hard to stay behind him when he is in the other lane.
Doesn't Deena Kastor also run with an ipod at times?
i kinda have a sunglasses thing.
Female coach having affair with male runner. Should I report it?
If Daniel's and Pfitz are outdated..then where do I look for modern training plans?
