Two quick comments:
McMillan is a Lydiard style coach. You need long term vision, not the short term vision that has(d) ruined running in North American and western Europe.
I'm all for Lydiard. But how old are the Africans who kicked our ass on Sunday? How much long term vision is going on there?

"Hansons started the program in 1999. They had a 6th place finish in the Olympic Trials 10k and an 11th place finish in the marathon all within the first year"
At the Olympic Trials, there is no 6th place and 11th place. At Olympic Trials there are two places: top 3 and everything else. If guys in those races were running to place as high as they reasonably could (and not necessarily to make the team), it wouldn't have been 6th and 11th for the 2 Hansons guys. It would have been a lot lower.
And that is not knocking on the Hansons. I don't know why everyone is so focused on "development." Ritz, Hall, Kennedy, Rupp, Teg -- all are (were for BK) young guys who are focused on the now. Why not have a model for the guys in Zap, Indiana, and Mcmillan to focus on the short term -- see how much of a jump you can make in 2 years. If you can't make that level of a jump, then the reality is they will never be a player internationally.
The Hansons put in a lot of work to get a guy on the team ---- who has no real shot of medalling. It is a great, feel good story that is nice for the sport (and for Brooks). But I don't think we should be holding it up as the model, if our goal is producing people who can compete in international championships.
Why not this model -- let's take the top 10 graduating collegians in each event and sponsor them with USATF money for 2 years. Make them all train together in the same location under the same coach. Give them DEMANDING workouts that will either a) push them closer to 3:31 / 8:00 / 13:00 / 27:20 levels, or b) weed them out. If the goal is to produce athletes who can medal, why not this?
Otherwise, McMillan is doing this to collect the rent.
(ask McMillan about the 4br house he was leasing from a professor on sabatical for $1200 a month -or $300 a room- then charging the athletes $400 a room. Several people left the group when they found this out.)
