little to none. men did NOT like him for good reason
actually, he coached the mid-distance men for a few years when he first got to g'town.
in the late 80s, he was the coach of all the 800 people, and low mid-distance runners, both guys and girls. Gags handled the distance people - both guys and girls.
during the era of trautmann, holman, etc. it was switched where helmer took over coaching the women and gags took the men.
helmer coached some great athletes when he had those half-milers, guys like ethan frey and others.

That is untrue and it's Rick Helmer who is now at Indiana.
