I think that depends on your major. I have a desktop, but now I could really use a laptop (I'm a senior). As far as brand goes, that also depends on what you are studying.
Tips for a freshman...
- Live off campus if you can, as soon as you can.
- Stay away from the dining hall(s)...cook your own food.
- Get enough sleep.
- Don't drive drunk or ride with a drunk driver...designate a driver, call a cab, or do what my friend does and keep a sleeping bag in your car in case you need to spend the night at someone's house.
- Know how to change a flat.
- Do not speed on campus...campus police are always bored and will stop you any chance they get.
- Join an organization(s), including xc/track if you are doing that.
- If you are running on a college team, run EASY on your recovery days, warm-ups, etc. and fast during workouts and races.
- It's your choice, but I'd advise you not to date anyone on your team as a freshman.
- Do not get a dog or cat...you may end up moving somewhere in the future that doesn't allow pets.
- Talk to a counselor if you feel depressed, etc.
- Do not consult letsrun.com for any medical issues.
- Study something you enjoy.
- Stay in touch with your family.
- Have fun.
