slowtwitch.com has a post from one of the survivors.
that freaks me out and pisses me off at the same time. it's one of those things that as a rider you know could happen at any time but you are banking on the odds that it won't. i'm so sad for everyone involved.
dude that sucks, I've been hit three times - 2 running, once on the bike.
Riding in a group gives a false sense of security sometimes -sure didn't make a difference here.

Umm, how would not having a false sense of security have helped here when a guy is going 40 mph falls asleep and plows into you? Nothing could be done, very sad story.
This is ridiculous. The Governator should require driver training for all California law enforcement officers.
Did they take a blood and urine sample ? Or did they let him slide. You know, cops use "professional courtesy" to let their buddies get away with murder, rape, roadside justice, embezzlement, child perversion, etc. You read so much about that sorta stuff in the news everyday.

You should probably read the article. Everything here was addressed in the first few paragraphs.
Read more than one article from more than one reporter to get an accurate story. The press often work with the police to cover up police crimes especially in New York and Los Angeles.

And to help out fellow members of (insert fraternity/lodge/drug partners). Thats the way the world works. Justice is a fairy tale.
It's pretty damn hard to cover up something like this when multiple witnesses have stated that the deputy was flat out admitting that he must have dozed off.
Reporters need to find out if what the cop said is a lie or an excuse. Was the cop DUI, on Meth, or Crack, or physically unfit for duty ? What is his history of infractions ? Has he run over people before ? Etc. Etc. Etc.
That guy should be charged with involuntary manslaughter, unless they find he was drunk, then charge him with 2 counts of Capital Murder.

This looks like just a horrible accident and even cops (good or bad) make mistakes. He should pay a price based on the findings of the investigation but this is something that will haunt him for every second for the rest of his life.

No, it won't. It might bother him for a while, perhaps a long while. But he will get over it, unlike the cyclists who will remain dead.
If you had said "this is something that will haunt the families of the cyclists every second for the rest of their lives," I would believe you.

I don't think anyone with a conscience can go a day knowing they killed someone and not feel bad about it.
Santa Clara County may try to cover it up, in which case Civil Rights charges should be brought by the U.S. Justice Department, a civil lawsuit begun, and he should be put on watch by internet-based surveillance groups that are tracking the daily activities of O.J., the Duke LaCrosse rapists, and other criminals who have skirted the law. Murder crimes cannot be forgiven. Remember, the victims were white, for Christsakes.
Come on guys like the above poster said, it seems like this guy made a huge mistake and fell asleep...something that hundreds if not thousands of americans do every year.
Its extremely tragic, it will haunt this guy the rest of his life and its obvious there was no intention this guys part to hurt anyone, much less kill them!
A tragic story for everyone, this obviously will ruin many many lives as well as tragically ending two of them.
Thats no excuse. He'll have to serve time for 2 counts of Involuntary Manslaughter. If he knew he was sleepy, then he should serve 20 years for two counts of 2nd degree murder. Nobody held a gun to his head and made him join that drive the car into those three people.
