No men are allowed in the gym between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays, and between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Even the staff during those times is all women.

Well, at least our millions and millions of dollars in donations are finally coming to fruition. Up to now, all we got was the guarantee that our royal kids would get an education, no matter how dumb they were. Now, we are managing to change the mindset of one of America's great intellectual institutions. Osama was so over the top with that whole 9-11 scheme. We told him we should just buy American cowards into Islamic fundamentalism.
one of the leading advocates of the change was a muslim women that said "We must show tolerance and respect for all others." ..........as she gets men banned from the gym.
"The policy only applies to one gym, a facility mainly used for intramurals. Because of its location at the edge of campus, it is the university's least used gym, Mitchell said."
I don't know which gym that is, but it's not the one with the cool indoor track, which was the only one worth going to when I was there.
I'm not a fan of special accommodations for various religions, but a little flexibility to accommodate cultural differences doesn't seem particularly out of line to me. Besides, when I was living in a dorm room there, I froze my tail off because the heat had been turned off while the Christians were all home celebrating the birth of Jesus. Giving the Muslim women a few hours in a hole-in-the-wall gym doesn't seem like such a big deal to me.
This is going to open a Pandora's box.
Boston University Islamic Society President Mohamed Serageldin said he thinks women-only gym hours would benefit Muslim women at BU.
"Because the FitRec is co-ed, [a Muslim woman] would most likely be compromising her modesty. He said modesty can be compromised on both the part of the man and the woman when physical action is involved."
c'est pathétique...
It’s the thin end of a very large wedge.
Okay maybe on an obscure gym - but when it starts impinging on areas that really affect the character of a country and the well-being of it’s inhabitants - as certain concessions as the one detailed below from my country - one realises that giving in just once, means that more and more concessions will inevitably be demanded - and it’ll no longer be about changing the rules in an minor gym.
‘Muslim women training in several hospitals in England have raised objections to removing their arm coverings in theatre and to rolling up their sleeves when washing their hands, because it is regarded as immodest in Islam.’
I really get pissed off when people who claim to be liberal won't provide reasonable accomadations for people with other values. SHouldn't liberals welcome everybody? Well in France, you can't wear a headscarf! To me, this ultra liberalism is not inclusive; it is restrive by saying that liberalism is the only way. Isn't that hypocritical?
If you wan't to be a real liberal, then give people the right to be conservative.
I am not a Muslim and I support this 100%
I say if they want their own gym or times or what ever let them pay for it and open their own. If they can not do that then, live by our rules!
AN, the heat was not turned off as an accommodation to Christians specifically. Wasn't it just a holiday?
Secondly, would you be OK with parts of the food service offering no Coke or coffee from 8-10 because LDSers don't like it -- or would you simply say, "Hey, if you don't like coffee, don't order any."?
Can the Baptists insist on no co-ed dorms?
Can the Catholics insist on no condoms available at the health service centers?
It's a very bad precedent; the consequences and downside are neither immediate or catasrophic, but the die is cast.
This is how things work at universities. When enough students get together to complain about something, occasionally the administration will throw them a bone.
The rationale is that it's not really hurting anyone, but it's providing a valuable service for a portion of its student body that previously felt neglected.
I have no problem with it, Harvard can run their gyms however they see fit. How is this news?
Harvard is a private institution, and can do whatever they like in this regard. If it were a state school, I'd have a big problem with it.
Here in Brooklyn there's a private business, the 'Kosher Gym.' They used to have sex-segregated hours of operation, but the business was so good they went ahead and opened a second location across the street, so now they segregate that way.
At least this establishes a precedent for banning groups of people who inconvenience your workout. Maybe my gym will be open to outlawing arm curls, calf raises, wife beaters, cell phones and spandex tops for a few hours each week.
Uh, move to the South and you'll see that Christians have been having their special sensitivities accommodated forever. They just think it is normal.
I despise all this bending over backwards for religion, but you can blame Christians for it - since they get accommodated, then everyone gets to be accommodated.
It just seems to me that the right only gets riled up when Muslims are being kowtowed to. It is utterly foolish in every case, but the same folks who rightly criticize this sort of baby stuff for Muslims are the same ones who defend the exact same mindset in Christians.
Examples?
I kind of agree. I think Muslim folks usually get the brunt of it when other sects have been accommodated before. Nevertheless, it is bullsh*t anyway. I remember something similar in our university paper that said footbaths may be installed to accommodate Muslim students. I happen to go to a very liberal university, and hate it most of the time because of this whiney attitude that everyone has to be entitled to whatever they want at the expense of others.

They are welcome - it is their stupid evidenceless religious beliefs that deter them. I don't understand why mere beliefs deserve to be accommodated. I have yet to hear a reasonable argument for this sort of relativism. Call a belief "religious" and no matter how stupid we are supposed to respect (rather than tolerate) and go out of our way to facilitate it. Show me some evidence, then i will respect the belief. If people hold a value but they don't pretend some God is demanding it of them, do they get accommodated?
Well, let's see. How about all the states where Christians think prayer before public events, displays of religious symbols on state property, ten commandments in courtrooms, believing in a religious test for holding office, teaching creationism in schools, crying victim every time things taught in school differ from your received beliefs? Blue laws, dry counties?
the funny thing is that they picked the least convenient gym and the least convenient hours. very few women will be willing to make the trek from the river dorms at 8 am. they obviously want to appear concerned without making any real changes.
in any case, the only reason I care is I live across the street from the qrac, and am annoyed I can't lift in the mornings any more
