By the way, Lauren was the silver medalist in the Junior Pan American Games AND the bronze medalist in the Pan Am Racewalk Cup and she is only in college. How many of you can say that you have won medals in international competitions?[/quote]
So what's the excuse for the muffintop? Has she popped out a few kids? If she didn't have that maybe she would have taken the gold.
racewalkers are on this board because matt dewitt posted this on a racewalking yahoo group. i did a little creative research:

now, had he not done this - no one would have noticed. but now, you're getting a bunch of walkers feeling the need to "defend" this girl.
and really?
this is hardly the first time someone has mocked an athlete for being too "fat," its clearly not limited to the walk, its just the environment here. and why i'm glad i'm not a woman, because by drawing so much attention to this thread it will certainly get back to the girl in question (Lauren Forgues of Maine). and its funny, because looking through some of these other pictures - she really doesn't look that bad. maybe a little bigger than a lot of athletes, but really...look at the pictures from the DMR with all the other non pros. most of us who are not full time athletes aren't going to look perfect, so why single her out? because you think she's in a stupid event?
i could care less what her event is. i've been outkicked by women with less than perfect abs in races all the time. the fact that this girl racewalks doesn't matter to me. i don't quite get the racewalk hate to begin with (how is it more stupid than the triple jump), but i *do* hate the elitism i sense from walkers, and this jumping to "defend" this girl is a perfect example of that. she's hardly the first girl to be called "fat," and sadly...I doubt she will be the last.

Second, where does it put any of you sad folk that get beat by race walkers? I do remember cruising by many a laughing runner in the Philly marathon and distance run, while race walking at sub 8’s. They weren’t quite laughing when I negative splitted and they couldn’t keep up. Be careful casting those stones in glass houses.

How many people do you really think get beat by race walkers in a given race who are legitimate runners, seriously? I mean, you have to feel good about walking an 8 minute mile past fat, old, beer-bellied-weekend-warrior-middle-aged-guys. Wow. Congratulations, you sure showed them what's up.

I can in all honesty say that I would rather be a below-average-nobody Division I runner than be a World Class race walker.
Not everyone feels that way, and I'm not saying that's the way everyone should fee. But that's how I feel.
You'll also note that the Yahoo Groups Post has been deleted.
yes, i did notice that.
of course, the damage was already done and you can read the original post in the replies here:
(as i noted, its funny how he takes this as an attack on "his sport" where as really - its a personal attack towards the girl in question, just like every other "she's not hot" or "she's fat" post we've ever seen here.)

Subject: [racewalking] Letsrun.com Strikes Again
I can't believe what I saw posted today on Letsrun.com. Someone had
the audacity to post a message about one of our racewalkers'
appearance. This person needs to get a stiff talking from everyone of
us. He and anyone sharing his opinion simply has no respect at all.
See the posting at:

Thanks for that info, but I'm still trying to understand this. Does this guy spend his days searching the internet for negative comments about race walkers?
Okay, walkers, I have nothing against you personally and I understand that many of you walk because of old age or an injury, but this is not letswalk.com.
I post on another RUNNING forum and a nice (overweight) lady has decided to join us to talk about her marathon walking. Good for her, yes. But now she gets offended when someone in the RUNNING forum posts, "happy running everyone," "how was your run today?", "how can I become a better runner?"...She always has to chime in defensively to say, "don't forget the walkers, what about us, we're athletes too, blabla"....pure insanity.
So please find your own racewalking forum and don't get offended here when we say that we love RUNNING.
In addition I don't like the comments about medalling and competitions. I have no respect for someone who chooses a sport because there is less competition and it's EASIER to place well (triathlon and racewalking come to mind).
looking through some of the more recent posts, it sure seems like it. which boggles my mind. that said, i need to off this board and get back to work...

wow .. this is all kind of pathetic.. this discussion has degenerated into the territory of being totally classless..
I'm a regular letsrun.com reader even though I neither walk nor run anymore..
that is what is great about a forum like this 'good' discussion on the sport
I like to think I have friends and respect from both sides of this argument -- but seriously guys -- relax!
I rarely post -- and I'd never post my PR's ... but I feel inspired today!
(granted this was 10+ years ago),
One Mile PR's:
Running: 4:27
Race Walk: 6:21
I like to think those are both solid performances

I don't recall this happening.
Wow, those are some nice times!

The point is that racewalking does not have a place in the sport of track and field. every other event, on the track or field is a competition to see how fast you can go or how far you can throw, or jump. racewalking is a competition to see how fast you can walk... yes, im sure it takes a whole lot of hard work and dedication to succeed, but it does not fit into the category. it should be its own sport
Racewalking is about how fast you can go within the constraints of the rules. Long jumping prohibits several techniques that would increase jumping distance (somersault, throwing weights for instance). In the throws, the implements have to be within a certain weight.
Answer me this: exactly how does another person racewalking impact you? How does it make a difference or impair your life?
If you will go back to the beginning, it wasn't a racewalker who started this thread. And believe it or not, there are people who are both runners and walkers, or who follow both sports.
If you want to go back to my post, I wasn't commenting on what began this thread. I was commenting on a specific post, you know, the one I quoted.
If you go back to that post, you'll see my question was specifically asking about his post which is why, you know, I quoted it.
If you go back to that post, then the subsequent post, telling me someone posted this thread on a walking message board, you know, answered my question why he was posting here.
That's if you will go back to my post, not the beginning.

I'm confuse...Should we go back to your post?

Whatever, Play your games if you wish. My point is that if a RUNNER hadn't started this post, there'd be nothing for all of you to get your undies in a bunch. And I'm a runner and a running coach, FYI.
If you go back to my post, you'll see my undies weren't in a bunch.
If you go back to my post, you'll see I was asking why a walker got his undies so bunched, he went and posted it on a walkers forum.
But the fact that you are a runner and running coach is really impressive.
racewalking is stupid. Hope that helps.
Running determines who is the fastest at moving their bodies. Walkers can not keep up with runners. This is why few people participate in it, and this is why fat and old people can have success at it.
