http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080109/OPINION03/801090378/1031Sell's first race of 2008 will come later this month, when he and some of his teammates -- including Mike Reneau, Mike Morgan and Pat Moulton -- spend a week in Florida training before running the ING Miami Half Marathon on Jan. 27.
"It's a low-key event -- and that's intentional," Hanson said of Sell's quiet start after logging more than 6,000 miles in training last year. "Quite honestly, Brian struggles at coming back from his marathons. Because of his ability to focus and put everything into his marathon build-up and race day -- his mind really doesn't rest -- he's just not able to recover quickly. He's probably the worst at it from the entire group. And right now, he's struggling in his training. But as a coach, I've seen it a number of times, so I'm not concerned."
The group that's headed to Miami also plans to run the Austin Half Marathon in Texas on Feb. 17 and likely the USA 15K Championships on March 10 in Jacksonville, Fla. Chad Johnson and Kyle O'Brien are slated to run the London Marathon on April 13, while Nick Arciniaga and Pat Rizzo will run in Boston on April 21.
The spring build-up will culminate with a return engagement for Sell at the annual Fifth-Third River Bank Run in Grand Rapids on May 10. He won that race, which doubles as the USA 25K Championships, in 2005 and '07, and this year he'll aim for the American record Fernando Cabada set (1:14:20) in winning the '06 race.
As for Beijing, the tentative plan for Sell is to train in the heat and humidity in Orlando in the weeks preceding his trip to China, where the marathon will be final Olympic event on Aug. 24.
