Badddeley is right up there despite being a tab.
agree with Gompers- fantastic career and had his articles recommended many times by my management tutors and usually a good read.
Maybe I missed it, but Bannister. Probably more accomplished as as medical researcher than as a runner - and that's saying something.
Zinedine Zidane as smartest, summet like an IQ of 160
Havent read through the whole thread but has nobody mentioned one of the great thinkers of our time - Mr David Beckham?
"Alex Ferguson is the best manager I've ever had at this level. Well, he's the only manager I've actually had at this level. But he's the best manager I've ever had."
Johnny Damon struggles a bit
Sir Roger Bannister: Smartest.
Marion Jones: Dumbest (although 2/3 of all sprinters can be this winner)
A couple old NFL football names:
smart: qb, Dr. Frank Ryan
dumb: Big Daddy Lipscomb, Bob Ferguson
Smart- Bill Walton.
Dumbest- AJ Harmon (watch this vid and you will see why)http://video.nbcsports.com/player/?id=201546
dumbest: about 60% of the NBA's players.
BOY are they DUMB!
Frank Ryan. That's an excellent choice. Mathematics
degree from Rice University if memory serves.

You did, but no prob.
I don't read all through every thread before I post, either.
For smartest:
Byron White and Bill Bradley have already been mentioned. It's hard to top these two.
Another name not yet mentioned:
Joe Juneau (Pro Hockey) completed the requirements for his Aeronautical Engineering degree with a 3.8 GPA from RPI in 3 years. He completed his masters degree part time while playing in the NHL.
I think most who posted in this thread are among the stupidest athletes alive. By the way, why is being a professional the only qualifier for being an athlete?
How about we as a race of humans just screw IQ discussions, hell, screw IQ tests, screw measuring intelligence because at the end of the day it doesn't predict jack shit except whether you might win the Nobel prize, and even then, the range is huge.
Likely if a person is two standard deviations above average (114) they can achieve at the highest levels in almost any discipline. Thats not to say that smarter people can't do better, its just that nobody is really smart enough to tell the difference anyway.
Who was a better painter, Raphael or Michelangelo? Was Mozart or Bach a better composer? Personally I like Michelangelo and Bach, but honestly, who the f*** knows and does it matter? I'm not smart enough to rationally say one or the other is definitively "better", nor do I think its possible to determine except for our all knowing creator god.
Intelligence is a trait like good looks. Good looks are a better predictor of success. Good looks and height. At the end of the day tall good looking people lead the best lives, not the smartest people.
Ask yourselves why looks are so important. Because our creator god says thats what matters. Because quite f***ing honestly its all about sex, life is all about sex people. Thats why we have all the gifts we have, and brains have traction in that arena up to a point, beyond it brains start to be a disadvantage.
Also a tall good looking stupid person is likely to screw stupid people, who are more likely to get pregnant early and often. Thats just numbers baby.
So say goodbye to your happy society of geniuses!!! Wait, I nearly forgot science will give us pills that makes us all geniuses with massive erections and the muscles of Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Which is the crux of my point, it won't matter who is smarter when you can buy smart. You can already buy looks.
I guarantee you that when those smart pills hit the market the world is going to get 100% more f***ed up. Super high intelligence is a danger to our survival.
I say the dumbest is Yao Ming...that f***a can't even speak no english good.
Don't know if any one has mentioned it, but Frank Gore is an idiot. I believe he scored a 6 on the Wunderlich, which was the lowest score of the Draft Class. Vince Young got a 10, which doesn't say much for his brain either.
In terms of smart athletes, some that you might not think are smart but are include OJ Mayo(30 on the ACT's I believe and tested out of Freshman English) and Emeka Okafor(Graduated in 3 years, high GPA if I recall correctly).
"Likely if a person is two standard deviations above average (114) they can achieve at the highest levels in almost any discipline."
For most IQ tests, two standard deviations above the mean is 130, not 114. That's hardly exclusive--about six million people in the US are at that level or higher--but it's far different from a 114, which on most tests is (very roughly) around the 65th percentile.
"Screw measuring intelligence because at the end of the day it doesn't predict jack shit except whether you might win the Nobel prize."
Actually, it predicts a lot of things. IQ does a pretty good (no, not perfect for everybody) job of predicting success in school...no surprise, given that that's precisely why IQ tests were originally developed. It does a pretty good job of predicting what level of college you'll attend (and that, in turn, can sometimes predict several other life outcomes). It is somewhat of a predictor for what kind of job you'll have; and for how well you'll do in whatever job you *do* have. And so on.
"Intelligence is a trait like good looks. Good looks are a better predictor of success. Good looks and height. At the end of the day tall good looking people lead the best lives, not the smartest people."
Likely true...but there's also a well established (positive) correlation between height and IQ. (Not a real surprise to the fully-grown folks.)
"Super high intelligence is a danger to our survival."
Shawn, it's nice to know that you and I will be around to pick up the pieces.
Oh yeah, add Myron Rolle of Florida State who is on track to be a doctor after a half dozen years in the NFL.
