Unfortunatly for Ryan he ended up being a sparring partner for Kim McDonald's athletes. He left most of his potentially great races on the practice track. That 13:19 was just a hint of what he had inside of him.

Bohica,
Do tell of this "Razorback Syndrome?" As a bitter former Razorback yourself, you must know a little something about this...syndrome having suffered from it yourself.
I think there was some British guy back in the mid 50's who walked away from the sport not long after running a pretty good mile.
\'50s, not 50\'s.
has everyone forgot? wrote:

I doubt Kempainen ever broke 28:20.
In 1996 only three Americans broke 28:10. Todd Williams, Brad Barquist and Dan Middleman.
2823 was his best.
Yeah, I ran at UArk, duncecap. Uh huh, right.

These are your what? List of people who never "made" it? People who suffer from your "syndrome"? Why don't you spit it out and stop being such a puss? All I see on that list are some pretty damn fast athletes with times that most would kill for...guess all you see are a bunch of failure? If that is so, why stop the list there? The bottom line is you don't know what you are talking about.
Seb Coe walked away in the middle of a workout once he realized that he was never going to be any faster.
i guess i would have to vote that these guys actually had respectable careers once they left u of ark- know reina was multiple nat'l champ after graduation, lassister took at least one after grad in the 15, godfrey was destroyed by sickness/illness so that's really a moot point, bruton won millrose, mitchell ran some respectable races on the road, cragg beat bekele indoors and has also run 13.08....i'm not sure what more this fellow is looking for? though a completely different division and isolated under dr. joe in alamosa, we still had the utmost of respect for the hogs...give kudos where kudos is due...
You can lead an idiot Letsrunner to water....

And the most notbale in Joe Falcon is not even mentioned, although he 'limped' away after his 3:49 dream mile.
notable
You can't really compare Herb Elliot, Peter Snell, Ann Packer, Roger Bannister to the current list of 'fast athletes who walked away from sport'. The strict amateurism rules of 70s and earlier decades made competing and living above the proverty level next to impossible. Steve Prefontaine lived on food stamps for God's sake.
Baloney. Falcon ran 3:49 in 1990. Competing at U.S. Nationals in 1991. Fell down at the 1992 Olympic trials. And was still running, at least indoors in 93 and 94.
He didn't just walk away any more than John Trautmann.
Perhaps a certain Hicham El Guerrouj. Double olympic gold and then never races again. Same goes for Kelly Holmes on the women's side.

Cragg ran 7:32 last year making him the 3rd fastest performer in the world behind Bekele and Kipsiro

ill give you one guess for the reasons behind both these sudden retirements.
the word starts with 'dr' and ends in 'gs.'
hicham lasted 3 olympics and numerous wc's. I was getting on in age and probably wanted to go out on top and not be like morcelli who pretty much went downhill at the end
trautmann didn't walk away, he was hurt aftr 1992
Fear of dragons. It must have been tough for El G and Holmes.
