Honestly, I wouldn't have the foggiest idea how many that is (I was enlisted), but you don't "have to be an officer." I do know that the slots available are highly coveted though.

I won a real tough seal challenge down in San Deigo a few years ago
Let\'s get this straight. The highest casualty rate in the U.S. Navy are for Hospital Corpsman assigned to U.S. Marine Corps units (Fleet Marine Force). The rating is HMC(FMF). They are the most elite part of the Navy. There is no other.
Bump.
Spelling errors aside, the FMF Hospital Corpsman are the true elite the Navy. Its the Navy's only non-Politically Correct job. FMF Hospital Corpsmen have their wills filled out, burial plot purchased, and gravestone engraved with all but the date of death. All other jobs are for those who want to join the military and avoid the infantry. Of course, most who join the Navy are in for the time honored traditions (ex: having homosexual ...).

i am a marine and i envy the navy seals. we all do. enough said.
recon marines must go thru one of the gb/pj/seal schools depending on what's available that month, then thru usmc recon school only for marines. how does that compare ?
Afghanistan will soon be a USMC only area. The Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Air Force Para Jumpers, CIA, DEA, etc. are all being re-deployed to Hollywood to hype up thier images for recruiting purposes. What does that tell you ?
When did that Seals Sorority become the Navy\'s elite ? It\'s always been the unarmed Navy medics that fill the morgues. Safe choice to join the Seal branch. You\'d be a fool to signup to be a medic.
