Get in the pool and start swimming ASAP. Get some coaching.

You won't have any trouble with the running requirements, but the SEAL program is not a track team.

PS: While you're doing laps you'll have plenty of time to consider the advantages and disadvantages of a career in the US military.

One thing that is really tough for some people who come from a running background to SEAL training is that certain parts of it are about cold tolerance in water and skinny runners tend to lose body heat a lot faster than someone who is coming out of a swimming background to the training. Talk to a SEAL recruiter about this before committing yourself. You might find that the Marines or Army elite forces are a better fit with your physical profile.

Shut the hell up. Someone who truly possesses the CHARACTER to become a SEAL would not enlist with the attitude of "well...I want to be able to say I was a SEAL so I'll enlist, get my Trident, and then quit." Shut the hell up. You don't have what it takes if that's how you're approaching it.

You need to realize that you can't just inlist in the Navy and immediately go to Navy Seals training. These men are often in the militarty for more thana couple of years before they have been recommended by their superiors to go to the Navy Seals training. I suggest you do a lot more research before inlisting otherwise you may find yourself cleaning toilets on some destroyer or stuck in a submarine for 4 years.

Go to youtube & look for the Discovery Channel 5 or 7-part (I forget) video series on a SEAL class going through "hell week".

If you hate war, don't enlist. Seriously. Go to LPN or RN school if you desire.

Currently at Coronado doing the whole special operations training. I was a fast runner 4:01 miler, 14:17 5k, 29:05 10k, even ran a 2:23 marathon. Currently getting back in shape to do some races for the Navy I am 25 years of age. Running doesn't have much of anything to do with Navy Seal training what will get you through it is a strong mentality being able to put up with grueling days that start at 4:30am and sometimes end as late as 11pm or even 12am. Other aspects you have to consider the maturity level. A great deal of candidates are 18 or 19 years old let alone most of these guys don't make it but you still have to room with these kids and they do play a factor too because they tend to bother the hell out of guys are age. So why you are holding back from trying not to retaliate and fight these guys you still have to keep your mental mind strong. Hell week is the real deal you will be cold you wont get sleep and you will be tested and pushed to the limits 5 1/2 days of cole wet grueling pain. They do everything possible to make you quit you have to prove you are worthy enough to be there. These instructors are not track coaches a lot of them have multiple kills under there belts and trust me they don't mind hurting us or putting you through hell. Room inspections they destroy your whole room and expect it to be perfect not a grain of sand in it. If yu are perfect at the inspection you think you get to hear good job we are proud of you know you usually here your a shit bag you fail because your ugly go hit the surf.

You are very naive.

Just a few things from a more political viewpoint:

1) Mandatory service is a bad idea whether it be for the military or for community service. That is a form of slavery and takes away the very freedoms the US is supposed to stand for.

2) The SEALS are about a career. If you are not in it for the long haul then I think you will wash out (if selected which I think is doubtful) when the going gets tough (which is in the first 10 minutes).

3) As someone with the good fortune to know a few special forces types, one of them will kick your ass when they learn that you enlisted and wanted to become a SEAL just to be able to say you were a SEAL.

I worked with a fellow who was SELECTED for SEAL training. Myself and a fellow student trained him. My partner was a formerly LT Col in the Army but had some knowledge of SEAL training. The physical training itself was not the hard part. Many people who are fit could do a lot of the stuff asked, it is the mental strain, the sleep deprivation and caloric restriction (although this is not as bad as it once was). It is the discipline and willingness to put up with the bullshit as well. Then there is the time in water. Who would think the water off San Diego could be that cold!!!

Why don't you make the U.S.A.T.F. team. That's the #1 track team in the world. Everyone will joke about you being a quere if you are in the Navy. At least join the Green Berets. There's nothing elite about Seals or Green Berets though. They are just regular soldiers, older career oriented. Don't by the Hollywood hype. You'll be disappointed.

I'd pick the Seals over HMC (FMF), which has the highest death rate in the Navy. Good choice.

Just to clear some stuff up here.

To be a SEAL it requires six years of mandatory service. Two years of training, then four years of active duty. Then don't forget that when you sign that contract to enlist it is actualy eight years(but the final two years are inactive reserve, but they could keep you active if they REALLY need you).

I am not in the military, but I have gone through MEPS(military entrance processing station) three times and am slated to leave for basic for the U.S Navy on May 20th. After graduation of basic, I leave for BUDS to try out to be a SEAL. It's in my contract. The Navy is looking for young men up for the challenge. You don't get "selected" so much as you try out(even if you arent in the Navy yet) and you get a slot at BUDS. If you fail out of BUDS, they are not going to make you a deck ape for four years. You have the option of doing something else.

Holy Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior ! HMC(FMS) is the only rating where the Navy has your tombstone picked out, cut, and engraved already. The only thing to fill out is the date you were KIA, and your rank. I really admire those guys, in their graves.

Please explain that? Why would you not want to become a SEAL and not be able to say you were a SEAL? I work with vets and really don't understand some of their logic. Granted they have the 'espirit of shared suffering' thing down cold, something to verbally bludgeon non-vets with...a sign of odd insecurity?...some of them get really boring for a while, usually the ones who did not see front line action. (Those people who DID get shot at are the quietest guys I work with, they can't put it far enough behind them.)

Then again I was too young for the draft and really had no desire to kill anyone, nor get yelled at by someone wearing a Smokie The Bear hat, to prove I was an adult.

I don't understand, too, why, in the age of tactical and mini-nuclear weapons, American lives and money are being risked ANYWHERE in the world?

In the space of under an hour numerous trouble spots in the world would cease to exist, altogether, if these weapons were properly targeted and applied.

9/11 need NEVER have happened and the current messes in Iraq and Afghanistan need not be ongoing as the world would have live in fear of US retaliation.

Honest. I am not poking fun at men who served, my Father was one, but Korea and Vietnam even today, make no sense.

No American lives need have been even risked.

For the record, just remember that as far as Letsrun.com'ers are concerned, you are joining the C team. Air Force PJs, Green Berets, SEALs, Smokejumpers, etc. are not elite athletes. Rather they are U.S. Government employees, with standards low enough so that their ranks can be constantly filled with replacements. Do what you have to do.

i have a friend that is a seal, although he doesnt admit it to people or make it common knowledge to most of his friends(he dated a girl for awhile who thought he was just a bottom of the barrel navy guy), ive also met some of his friends that have been seals, and let me tell you they are some bad mother f*ckers, as far as strength, size, intelligence, fighting, just about everything. he has been in iraq a lot and in the last couple months been shot(2 bullets) and stabbed on a differnt occasion. and as far as just wanting to do it to say you are a seal, ive talked to him about people like that and said they can tell who is legit and who isnt, most of them end up quitting, or getting kicked out. all i know is they are some pretty bad ass soldiers, and none of them look like a runner, atleast the typical distance runner types.
